I worked at Alaska Railroad full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people and the work are the best, I really enjoyed the 23 years spent there. I would have made it 33 but upper management made it hard to believe in the cause. The CEO is doing a fine job, but he needs to adjust/boot out some of his managers.

    Cons

Some managers don't have a clue,- one sided, know it all and lack the knowledge and/or experience of dealing with people and projects, as well as waste a lot of Railroad budget.

    Advice to Management

Try listening to you're people, its okay to get ideas other than your own. And who knows, maybe some of them might save the company a few bucks or improve this great place.

    Pros

Good Pay and benefits. Work in Alaska

    Cons

Management worker relations and communications are poor and inconsistent.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to listen to workers not just hear them.

I worked at Alaska Railroad (More than a year)

    Pros

    One-of-a-kind railroad
Pride in their unique position for Alaska
    Historic significance

    Cons

    Political inner strife
    Cost for freight services
Lack of passenger services, discontinued whistle stop transportation services

    Advice to Management

Stop the in-fighting, support your employees, provide more training, end the practice of creating mini-fiefdoms and evenly distribute financial resources. Restore pride to your workforce. Don't allow a VP to destroy the lives of their employees on a whim or on a bad day. Encourage mentorship and find the positives in each employee, weed out the trouble makers.

    Advice to Management

Re-establish high school tour guide program in Fairbanks.

I worked at Alaska Railroad full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the people are nice.

    Cons

Management is inflexible, unethical, and extremely unwilling to change. It is the "good ol' boys" network there. Management is unwilling to help their staff grow. Any new suggestions are declined immediately without thought.
    Very disappointing employer.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff better. Listen to staff. Value them. Do not treat them like underlings. An executive management overhaul should be considered because most of management do not know how to grow or lead. Poor management and communication has resulted in bad habits.

I have been working at Alaska Railroad full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The Alaska Railroad is a critical link to the State of Alaska. Working here allows me, in my own small way, to make a big difference in the State I live in. Most of the people who work there are excellent people and make staying there worth it.

    Cons

The current economy in Alaska is hitting the Railroad hard. Non-union employees have gotten one raise in the last 5 years, and the future outlook is not any better. The hard times of the lower 48 are making their way up North. Senior Management in my area of the Railroad is very difficult to work for and makes me wish that the rest of the people working there were equally disagreeable, so I could feel good about deciding to leave to find other employment.

    Advice to Management

When you ask people to share cost-saving measures, make sure that you actually want to hear the answers.
