I worked at Alaska Railroad full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people and the work are the best, I really enjoyed the 23 years spent there. I would have made it 33 but upper management made it hard to believe in the cause. The CEO is doing a fine job, but he needs to adjust/boot out some of his managers.

    Cons

Some managers don't have a clue,- one sided, know it all and lack the knowledge and/or experience of dealing with people and projects, as well as waste a lot of Railroad budget.

    Advice to Management

Try listening to you're people, its okay to get ideas other than your own. And who knows, maybe some of them might save the company a few bucks or improve this great place.

I worked at Alaska Railroad full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Some of the people are nice.

    Cons

Management is inflexible, unethical, and extremely unwilling to change. It is the "good ol' boys" network there. Management is unwilling to help their staff grow. Any new suggestions are declined immediately without thought.
    Very disappointing employer.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff better. Listen to staff. Value them. Do not treat them like underlings. An executive management overhaul should be considered because most of management do not know how to grow or lead. Poor management and communication has resulted in bad habits.
