I have been working at Albert Einstein College of Medicine full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay especially for the immediate area (Bronx), Generally supportive and congenial atmosphere from others. The immediate area provides most conveniences needed.

    Cons

The current acquisition by Montefiore medical group is causing significant changes and challenges that affecting everything from IT, payroll, and purchasing.

    Advice to Management

Integrating an academic university to a healthcare provider is challenging due to their different goals. However, minimizing the impact of the administrative change and creating less beurocracy can be managed by planning ahead with agreement from both sides to minimize these issues.

I worked at Albert Einstein College of Medicine full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

at the time I was there (2005-2012), Einstein was one of the top research institutions in the country but also an unusually warm, collegial, collaborative environment. Excellent student/post-doctoral training. It still has a very collegial atmosphere, but due to major funding issues many faculty have either left or been let go.

    Cons

lost most of the endowment in the Madoff scandal. Substantial financial/employment instability since then

    Pros

The community at Albert Einstein is very diverse and international. Makes it easy for collaborations and reactive sharing within the Institute

    Cons

Poor choices of career progression. As a research associate, after 5 years of post doc you can not apply for your own grants and still completely dependent on your PI. Besides, healthcare plan choices are very bad

    Advice to Management

Consider offering a better health care plan. Also, think about the possibility of allowing research associates ask for independent grants!

    Pros

Einstein is a great place because it fosters a collaborative environment between labs, encourages sharing of reagents and forming a very social atmosphere. Furthermore, the campus is beautiful and there are a variety of easy ways to get into Manhattan by public transit.

    Cons

Sometimes administration can be bureaucratic but that is normal for any academic institution.
