Isolating with deep flaws and widespread unhappiness

      Pros

The facilities and resources are pretty good and the school encourages collaboration and sharing of research. The pay is also very competitive and has risen several times in the last 5 years.

      Cons

Many labs have toxic culture and the administration does nothing to address labs with issues of sexism and racism. Like many graduate schools, many of the students are unhappy and isolated - a problem which is exacerbated by the small size of the school and it's location in the Bronx.

      Pros

Interesting research. Decent benefits, including eye, dental and heatlhcare. Free shuttle to nearby subway station and other small perks. Social interactions with other groups and other support is encouraged.

      Cons

Limited upward growth, unless you plan on staying in academia and want to go for tenure track for Ph.D.s. Salary is low for overall NYC but just ok for Bronx. Some departments worse than others.

      Pros

Within my small division, I enjoy being surrounded by friendly, competent people. The school and its clinical affiliates have a proud history of being really active in the community, which is plagued by healthcare woes common among lower-income, immigrant populations. Einstein is part of a good medical research network, and enjoys significant collaborations with some of the top research institutions in the nation. Much to my surprise, employees in my category (Supervisory, Administrative, Managerial) have 4 weeks vacation offered from the first year of employment, with 100% matching on up to 7% 403b contributions, which seems rare in this field these days.

      Cons

difficult location to commute to (north bronx) sometimes feel unsafe or uncomfortable as an educated non-minority

      Pros

Einstein is a very close-knit community, especially because the campus is isolated from Manhattan. Thus, it's a place where everyone knows each other to some extent. The research and facilities are top-notch and there are always people willing to help. People are nice and collaborative there and the administration seems like they really care about the employees and academics and also the greater community.

      Cons

Some people might consider it a con that it is located pretty deep into the Bronx. But the community is charming and safe.

      Pros

Relaxing working environment except one lab. Nice and cheap neighborhood considering this is New York City. Fast for green card applications, with in 2-3 years for postdoc.

      Cons

Not very highly ranked. Not many labs to choose from is you are aiming at publishing Cell, Nature or Science. Bronx is a relative boring place.

      Pros

Very cooperative place. Good infrastructure, in terms of the facilities and equipments.

      Cons

It is in the Bronx, even tough it's a nice part of the Bronx, it is still 1.5 hours from the city. Besides that, everything else is great.
