Well funded and medicine research oriented institute.

      Pros

Relaxing working environment except one lab. Nice and cheap neighborhood considering this is New York City. Fast for green card applications, with in 2-3 years for postdoc.

      Cons

Not very highly ranked. Not many labs to choose from is you are aiming at publishing Cell, Nature or Science. Bronx is a relative boring place.

      Decent environment. Good benefits.

      Pros

Union benefits are good. Pay is competitive for academic research technicians. Work environment varies, but can be good or bad. Luck of the draw. Job is relatively steady and if you are good you likely can work there for years.

      Cons

The work culture, happiness, and concept of what success entails is extremely dependent on the particular lab you are in. This can be positive or negative depending on the lab you are in. Work/life balance can be better than average due to Union vacation allowances and good health insurance.

Good place to do medically-related research, but sluggish bureacracy

      Pros

Top researchers in a variety of biological research areas. A highly collaborative, productive, and friendly work environment. Some very modern facilities. Many of the principal investigators are very approachable and easy to work with.

      Cons

Not enough basic sciences biological seminars. In the older buildings, lab benches are small, offering limited laboratory workspace. Currently, the whole institution is in a period of flux as Montefiore Hospital takes over control of Albert Einstein from Yeshiva University. The HR and benefits administration is very bureaucratic and sluggish at keeping employees well-informed, and the hiring process is very slow and drawn out. Labor unions are very demanding, such as expecting several months sick leave.

      Pros

Rigorous work environment for research, open to collaboration, good facilities, strong research faculty, many opportunities to publish in peer-reviewed journals, cooperative environment

      Cons

Restrictions due to funding, culture of negativity in some departments, culture of conformity in most departments, lower chance of success than at higher-ranked institutions, difficult to have unconventional ideas or approach

      Good company in the past

      Pros

I enjoyed my time at Einstein until recently. It was a very laid back and flexible work environment. Most people on campus are very nice and helpful. Able to make friends easily and work well with most. Tuition reimbursement of 100% of tuition costs after 4 years of employment. Convenient enough location. 20 vacation days and Jewish holidays. Usually able to get requested time off.

      Cons

The threat of bankruptcy and being bought out by Montefiore Medical Center left a bad taste in our mouths. Many of our colleagues were laid off or fired this year and last year. Moral is low. Many PIs and staff members are leaving. It has become more of a corporate environment. Some directors do not get along with each other and has a trickle down effect. Did not get a raise last year or this year. No room for upward mobility in smaller departments.

      Good Training and Collaborative Atmosphere

      Pros

In general the laboratories and the research are very good. Students get challenged, receive a good training, and learn critical thinking. The institution is very collaborative, so it's a supportive work environment. Students and employees are very diverse and friendly and provide a good working environment.

      Cons

Currently the institution does not have a very active career and professional development office to help students and post-docs transition to their next step.

      Pros

Nice academic atmosphere; conducive work environment . Post-docs are well organised. The management is now listening and trying to improve the living conditions for them.

      Cons

Not much room for growth; post docs are not encouraged as much as they should be, in my opinion, though things are improving.
