    Cons

almost impossible to get a permanent position unless you are high on the seniority list, otherwise the jobs are given to someone more senior.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Union environment ensures annual raise, good vacation, flex-days, benefits and defined-benefit pension plan. There is more job security and overall stability than in many other industries.

    Cons

Kiss-up, kick-down culture is tolerated and too often encouraged; Management is blissfully unaware or they don't have the courage to face a difficult issue.
People get pigeon-holed in a position with no opportunity for advancement. Hiring from the outside is often seen as preferable as knowledge of the AHS IT environment is not given enough credit.

    Advice to Management

The big job title and increased salary you get with your management position comes at a cost. No one said it would be easy. If personnel issues make you anxious or queasy don't take the job. If you cannot handle criticism over difficult technical or financial decisions, don't take the job. Don't play favorites. Your job is to get the most out of the team you have regardless of the circumstance. Be respectful of your workplace and all colleagues, no matter their role.

Really good benefits, pretty good pay, great education and training. There is also a lot of room for advancement.
