    Cons

    -Bully type management
-All proficient mgmt left a year after AHS formed, only poor mgr's left
-Takes over 2 years to get a parking spot in the meantime you are bussed from a lot and still have to pay for that.

    Advice to Management

You need a 360 degree employee assessment that includes assessing your own manager.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The staff providing front line care ( doctors, nurses, health care aides, support staff and most lower level management) are there for the right reasons. Many of these people are putting in hours of unpaid time just to ensure patients are receiving safe care

    Cons

Upper management has little to no concern for staff and patients. Nursing jobs are being cut and AHS is planning to lay off several RNs over the next 2 years. Patients are being sent home before they are ready. Staff concerns are dismissed and staff is routinely bullied.

    Advice to Management

Be honest about what your agenda is. Don't claim that patient care is a priority when you are slashing the numbers of RNs and other health care workers

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of positions available because nobody stays

    Cons

Having less than 10 years seniority and getting to choose your vacation is expected but working understaffed, compromising patient care and not getting any vacation at all was not.

    Advice to Management

Stop compromising patient safety and staff units safely.

I worked at Alberta Health Services full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They have great benefits and pension plan.

    Cons

Managers who are untrained and engage in bullying behaviour

    Advice to Management

Already advised the department's VP, explained that there were grounds from a human rights complaint but he never acknowledged nor responded to the email.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

High salary, good benefits for out of scope staff

    Cons

I am being paid to do admin support work or have nothing to do while everyone runs around patting themself on the back talking about what a great job they are doing. All they do is go to courses or do team building, no work that helps patients

You only get promoted if you are a suck up or have a best buddy in GOA or executive

    Treat staff like children, micromanagement

Nothing valuable ever gets implemented due to the number of egos involved trying to make themselves sound intelligent and one up each other

Nothing gets implemented, you just generate useless documents

    Advice to Management

Get rid of half the OOS people and do some value added work.

Focus on what is important to the taxpayers of Alberta who foot your bills, not what is important to the Health Minister of the week

Nobody cares who you are buddy's with at the government. Develop some actual character and earn your position instead of being appointed by your pals when you don't do your job

    Pros

Not alot of pros, really bad environment, bad cycle of short staff and layoffs, lots of politics, payscale is ok for my classification I suppose

    Cons

See above, mostly cons with this employer, lots of bickering and infighting, lots of nickel and diming, if you go above and beyond and do some OT, prepare to spend 5 hours arguing for every 10 mins of OT

    Advice to Management

Stop laying people off, stop budget nickel and diming, return to patient care, stop allowing political people to make health care decisions

    Pros

Slightly easier access to psychiatric help. Semi-decent starting wage. Working in Alberta health services does help you get other jobs in Alberta health services because they hire internally.

    Cons

There was no bullying, harassment, or violence prevention training for any of the staff. Mobbing was a consistent and rampant problem - leading to long term PTSD from emotional and physical abuse that occurred on and off the job. Human Resources was limited to following directions from management; who were so removed from what was happening that they were part of the problem. Management also constantly tried to force people to come and do overtime shifts without receiving any overtime pay. The union made it impossible to let go of any staff member, even if they had a record for known bullying and harassment; the representative even went as far as mocking any staff member for complaining about another coworker. Senior management was never involved, the position was constantly being filled by temporary managers who could not have cared less.

    Advice to Management

Proper compensation for overtime hours and adherence to all of your policies, including time an scheduling, bullying/harassment and violence in the workplace.
