    Pros

Excellent team atmosphere in a patient-centered care environment. Beautiful hospital with lots of windows, piano in the cafeteria, two coffee shops. Great hourly pay in Alberta for health care professionals compared to other provinces.

    Cons

No health benefits if you are a casual employee. No guaranteed hours, requiring a secondary source of income.

    Pros

The cooperative working relationship between the unions and management create a fair and equitable working environment where the patient is the focus of quality care.

    Cons

Cost-cutting can create shortage of staff which can undermine quality of care. Patient' wait longer for care and this increases tension in the working environment.

    Advice to Management

Be more consistent in creating an Environment where patient needs come first and look to increasing efficiencies to save money.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Provincial system so there is opportunity to change locations without changing employer

    Cons

You are just a number and management let you know you can be replaced easily. Poor management practices, no transparency, frontline staff have no opportunity to address problems.

    Advice to Management

Treat your staff like people not like numbers, be transparent and hold managers accountable, do not accept the "do as I say not as I do" management model.

I have been working at Alberta Health Services full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Big organization and opportunity to move around

    Cons

It's a "do as I say" leadership style and rather poisonous. No accountability, do not look at all the facts before they make decisions. Unrealistic timelines where things are pushed through and then you spend more time fixing than doing the proper planning and work upfront. Employees are not valued.

    Advice to Management

Let people do the work they were hired to do and quit micromanaging especially when you know that that type of environment is not working. Be more fiscally responsible. Management haven't had a raise in years, but there is so much waste on big ideas that don't even make sense. Also, hire staff that can speak and understand English fluently.
