I worked at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) for less than a year

    Pros

The team at AIMCo is fantastic and is always willing to help the interns with work or answer any questions that they may have. Everyone at the office is very conscious about each others work life balance and there is not a culture of "superiority" whereby the new person gets dumped on with work, rather everyone pulls their own weight to the best of their ability. There is competitive pay at AIMCo. There are... opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Nothing in particular stands out, the company met and delivered on expectations that were expressed during the interview process.

    Advice to Management

Continue providing employees with a great work life balance, good people to work with, competitive pay, and the opportunity to learn

I worked at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    1) The Sycophants and boot-lickers with zero ability can still build a good career in this place

    Cons

    1) Too much politics 2) Make false promises 3) The leadership in BT is involved in a lot of politics which is shameful because generally senior management especially employees at Director level are not involved in politics at the ground level. 4) Boot-lickers thrive in AIMCO, a lot of others keep doing menial tasks and survive

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the leadership in BT especially the Directors and Senior Managers. They are highly insecure because of their incapability and promote office politics for their survival.

I worked at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

A lot of new things to learn about the financial industry for starters.

    Cons

    - Too much bureaucracy and red tapes. Managers would say they give you free hand to do their work but there would be people to block your ideas at all steps, as anything innovative is a complete no-no because senior people see that as a threat to themselves and their positions. - Its all talk and no action place. Higher management is least bothered about well being of the employees. The pay and benefits that are... touted as best in industry are no where close to peers (only benefit that Aimco has is with location, but that can be negative as well considering there are so few career options in the province). - There is a lot of favoritism, especially in BT. The hard workers don't get what they deserve while the so called favorites keep climbing the ladders at their expenses. The managers talk about growth but, that's only for their favorites, not a good place for talented and skilled person. - Hiring process is completely broken, as the managers sitting there have no clue on where to go and what to do. Even the best of prospective candidates are not considered due to unknown reasons leading to a place which is full of college students and fresh graduates lacking a proper leadership to guide them or even train them.

    Advice to Management

    - You need to start identifying the talent who can take the organisation forward and reward them accordingly. - Fix the hiring process asap and change the middle management who takes these decisions. A person cannot hire the right candidate until and unless they are not clear about what they are actually looking for. Also, treat the prospective candidate with respect and stop low balling and trying to achieve your... budgetary targets. - Just saying that we want to be world class does not make an organisation world class. You need world class talent to make a world class organisation and to do so you need to pay world class compensations and start respecting the talented people rather than just giving benefits to a handful of favorites. Start comparing pays with world class peers and you will be nowhere to be seen. - Let people work with freedom and come up with new ideas. Get experienced folks from the industry to support and train the young talent pool. Make Aimco the place where people want to stick around for the challenges and not for survival and retirement. - Set a proper hierarchy in the teams and refrain from handing out promotions to anyone and everyone. A good team needs a good structure, and a good organisation is always made up by great teams.

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

I am in awe of the hardworking and intelligent colleagues I have the pleasure of working with at AIMCo. I appreciate the diversity of our team and the meaningful work we get to do each day for Albertans. I truly enjoy coming to work because I have the opportunity to learn from my colleagues. Out of any employer I've worked for, AIMCo has presented the most opportunities for its employees to grow. From their generous... support of learning and development courses, to secondment opportunities and everything in between, you can build a lifelong career at AIMCo. AIMCo takes care of its employees with fantastic benefits and fosters collaboration amongst employees through fun social initiatives. I'm especially proud of the impact the AIMCo Foundation for Financial Education is making in the community. Simply put, coming to AIMCo was one of the best decisions I have made in my career.

The workloads can be heavy at certain times of the year.

    Advice to Management

To help employees achieve more balance, the option to work from home and more flexible hours would be desirable.

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time

    Pros

Benefits and pay are on par with other investment firms, although there's been a salary freeze for the last 4 years.

    Cons

In Business Technology, there is too much politics. Everyone is against each other, finger pointing everywhere. Employee morale is really low. Senior leadership sets you up for failure and then puts the blame on employees. They keep hiring leadership that doesn't know anything about the business and only focus on productivity. There are no concerns about the employee experience or health. There's little diversity... and may be discriminated against if you are not Indian. Especially on the Business Technology Delivery team where management is controlled by all Indians and all consultants that are hired are Indians. The rest of AIMCo doesn't care about Business Technology as they are separated in another building completely.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be positive culture and more focus on employee experience from the CEO. He came by once when he first started and never afterwards. Just left us to survive on our own in this poisonous culture.

I worked at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time

    Pros

AIMCO manages a tremendous amount of money.

    Cons

Everything else. It is bureaucratic in every manner, having much government past still infecting the company. The benefits are overrated and non-existent in certain cases. Management lies.

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good organization for junior professionals to gain some experience. For students straight out of university this firm can be good on your resume and help you break into the asset management industry.

    Cons

AIMCo recently won a court case which now officially allows it to fire senior professionals without cause and still not have to pay out their Long Term Incentive Plans. You can google "Styles vs AIMCO" for a Jan 2017 court ruling for more details. If the long term incentive plan is an important factor in your decision to join AIMCO, please be warned that It's much better to work at any other pension plan than... AIMCO as you can easily lose this bonus now after this court ruling.
