I worked at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) for less than a year

    Pros

The team at AIMCo is fantastic and is always willing to help the interns with work or answer any questions that they may have. Everyone at the office is very conscious about each others work life balance and there is not a culture of "superiority" whereby the new person gets dumped on with work, rather everyone pulls their own weight to the best of their ability. There is competitive pay at AIMCo. There are... opportunities for advancement.

    Cons

Nothing in particular stands out, the company met and delivered on expectations that were expressed during the interview process.

    Advice to Management

Continue providing employees with a great work life balance, good people to work with, competitive pay, and the opportunity to learn

    Pros

Great team and great experience. The pay was also very decent, given it's a student position. Very good work life balance. Almost no over time.

    Cons

Not so easy to get a full time offer after the summer term

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo)

    Pros

The company is well known in the industry. Has a good image. But my advice is to not waste years at this company. Get your experience and leave, there are private investment companies that will pay more and have a better work/life balance. If you are educated and competent in your area, you can do better elsewhere.

    Cons

Working hours are long, employees work late and yet still need to work from home on the weekend. Alberta labour laws are not followed for overtime hours. I know some people under report their overtime hours in fear of management reprimanding them. But managers are not helping to come up with solutions for why their employees need extra time to complete their tasks. Long hours at the office are encouraged. Don't... expect a 9 to 5 job. If you leave on time it will be frowned upon from your colleagues. There is high turnover because managers are incompetent. Lots of bureaucracy and politics in every team and promotions do not come from meritocracy but from politics. People get promotions only when someone on their team quits. Just because you have accomplished a lot over a couple of years, don't expect a raise or promotion until someone on your team leaves. Don't expect your manager to notice your hard work and reward you accordingly. You will get promoted if your manager likes you. And too bad if you have been working their longer than the guy next to you who just took a promotion you worked more years for. Almost everyone will complain about the work/life balance. If you visit the Operations team, those guys never leave the office even if they are physically not sitting at their desk they are remoting from home. In IT people are always on call for weekend work or evenings, certain people have worked so many OT hours they can take months off in order to use up their banked time.

    Advice to Management

Company is overstaffed with incompetent people. You do not need 2 managers and a director in a team with only 3 to 4 analysts/associates. Cut out the middle managers and hire people who actually produce something at the end of the day rather than sit around and be 'people managers' or 'leaders'. Some of your middle managers accomplish nothing of value, yet take lots of time off and push off their work to their... subordinates.

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Great work-life balance and benefits

    Cons

Management turnover high and quality is lower than similar organizations. Upper management come here for a few years to enhance their visibility and get opportunities they may not be qualified to get elsewhere. Typically they leave in 4-5 years and gather experience at the expense of clients. Client satisfaction with the company is very low.

    Advice to Management

Implement culture of excellence rather than simply talking about it. Instead of opening offices in Toronto/London move the organization to Calgary and hire competent people. Advice to the Board is to hire senior people who are willing to commit to stay at the head office for 10 years.

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Interesting projects and innovative deals. E.g. AIMCo is currently in the midst of a major financial system upgrade to replace some outdated applications, and streamline/automate processes. Sense of pride in managing member pension plans and endowment funds like the Alberta Heritage Fund. Hard work is rewarded, but sometimes it takes a long time to get rid of dead weight. Interesting people; many parts of the... world represented on staff with a wide variety of academic, social, and professional backgrounds. Social club has multiple events through the year that are well-received. Competitive bonus system, good health care and excellent pension. Subsidized bus passes and parking. Good downtown Edmonton location for main office, Toronto, Etobicoke, and possibly pending international branch offices. International travel opportunities for some groups involved with private equity deals.

    Cons

High turnover as people burn out. Work-life balance is not very good in some areas; be prepared to see people burning both ends of the candle into the night and on weekends (usually from home through VPN). Sometimes entrenched refusal to try new things unless something breaks. There is a mix of relatively new and painfully old systems. Some employees feel very entitled--just because the company manages ~$70... billion doesn't make the money theirs to spend. There is a wide division between people determined to save Albertan taxpayers and pensioners money and those determined to have extra luxuries as status symbols. There are some incompetent managers, promoted due to attrition. Have seen or heard some of them publicly belittling their subordinates. HR only aligns salaries with other financial institutions and pension companies. It refuses to consider salaries in energy companies, though they are sometimes just down the street, not just to be dismissed as being "only in Fort McMurray."

    Advice to Management

Work harder at promoting cost-effectiveness and innovation throughout all processes, not just the project-of-the-year. Implement more manager training; true encouragement does not come from a monthly coaching session and some token pats on the back. Consider changing health/dental/vision benefits to a flex-plan where employees can balance/pick their priorities instead of having a rigid plan with options only for... number of dependents. Get a janitorial service that actually vacuums under desks, similar to when we first moved into the Intact Building.

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great work life balance, very quiet office and friendly people in general.

    Cons

Company is in the process of transitioning from a government organization to operating more like a private company, currently about halfway there. Back/Middle office very bureaucratic, skill set and experience well below private sector standards at all levels. Location is a big negative.

    Advice to Management

Make sure mid-level management layer is staffed properly.

I have been working at Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo) full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Nice building to work in. Very modern office environment. Lots of social events throughout the year. A good place to get work experience for a new university hesitate.

    Cons

Very bureaucratic environment to work in. High turnover in staff and very inexperienced managers working in the backoffice. Front office management is more experienced. The pay is fairly average and you get your standard health benefits. Pay increases and promotions involve politics. As people leave the company, those who stick around are immediately promoted as a retention tactic. Expect to work more hours than... what you're told. Work-life balance does not exist here.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate who you hire into management positions. If you have toxic employees, then consider firing them before all of your highly capable and knowledgeable staff leave for better opportunities.
