    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Challenging and interesting work.
    Multi-National teamwork
    Good benefits
HR and other systems easy to use
Freedom within business units to tailor process to meet needs

    Cons

    Low standardization on tools/process
Not much opportunity to leverage latest software technologies to stay current with skills
    Not much opportunity for training
Company is not loyal to employees. There is too much bean-counting and tendency to outsource to lowest bidder

    Advice to Management

There is no such thing as a portable engineer. You need to value long-term knowledge and experience instead of focusing on where you can pay engineers the least.

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Large enterprises like ALU tend to have very well developed HR programs, experienced management, and know how to treat employees well.

    Cons

Inevitably there's a lot of bureaucracy. Things are particularly bad if they've been outsourced to third party providers. IT support is a case in point.

    Advice to Management

Bring IT support in house, but start to leverage the best-in-class SaaS providers for more things.

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Good team-work environment.
    Interesting work.
    Supportive environment.

    Cons

Stability in ALU Wireless development was always tenuous.
    No business growth.
Often high-level decision makers are over-seas.
Major Exec desire to out-source engineering jobs to Asia

    Advice to Management

Learn from proactive companies who have realized the hidden costs of "low-cost" overseas outsourcing are too high; and stopped this practice. Inefficiencies and time-zone challenges, constant training to keep-up with low-cost group attrition, and product quality reduction; can too easily be discounted or overlooked.
