    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The fellowship amongst long-time employees is superb; there was always a feeling of family and teamwork. It was possible to working relationships that transcended the workplace.

    Cons

Management was often directionless and stuck in the traditions of the past. Innovation lagged severely not just in business process but also in the ability to move forward on new technologies rather than just sit on them.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees at the lowest levels to get a real idea of where the company stands in the world. Dump the bean counters and overly developed management levels.

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time

    Pros

Recognition that the company needed to focus more on software / cloud based solutions. Spend on wireless, especially on CDMA, will decline and there needs to be alternative technologies to offset the revenue drop.

    Cons

Limited communication about the strategy to the employees. Re-sizing headcount disproportionately across various organization, causing low employee morale. Senior management may had the right strategy but not the right execution. The business continued to decline causing significant job losses.

    Advice to Management

When senior management is open and honest about the business situation and what is needed to generate growth, employees tend to be more dedicated to delivering the right results. The divisions who adopted the openness policy did better within the company, but the overall morale issues continued the business decline.

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Sad to say, have nothing great to say about the company. There was a time probably it was the best place to be and I would not trade it for anything else. Good old Bell Labs/Lucent Technologies culture and environment is gone.

    Cons

Nokia takeover is resulting in displacement of products and people with the new company positioning it's products with the US customers. Therefore, would not recommend till the time the dust settles.

    Advice to Management

    None

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time

    Pros

Good pay & benefits, somewhat flexible work schedule

    Cons

Wasn't the same after being acquired by Alcatel

    Advice to Management

Too heavy at the top level, management made decisions without fully understanding the impact on the lower levels

    Pros

Lots of great people who want to do the right things and succeed.

    Cons

Old school and not wiling to market the company. Build it and they will buy it. But they were getting better and trying new things.

    Advice to Management

You must adopt you methods to keep up with more savvy technology companies.

    I worked at Alcatel-Lucent full-time

    Pros

The technical staff at Alcatel-Lucent were generally very competent, professional, and helpful, since the technical positions require substantial education and work experience to advance.
Typical big company corporate culture: mission statements, customer focus, emphasis on diversity and mutual respect, good availability of internal training, good job mobility. Very process driven: internal document reviews, development and test processes and procedures, product life cycle schedule requirements, etc.

    Cons

Constant corporate miss-steps as Lucent Technologies eroded the technical excellence of the business (at least from a Bell Labs perspective). Originally focused on invention, creativity, and innovation, the company eventually had to become obsessed with profitability and shareholder value just to compete, and all that means to job security. Once merged as Alcatel-Lucent, the company was now French. U.S. employees are easier to shed than their European counterparts, so job security suffered in the U.S. anywhere job functions were duplicated.
Company acquired by and merged into Nokia in January, 2016. Due to the time lag between LTE and 5G technology, job security will be an issue on LTE project in U.S. (in 2016, 2017).
