I worked at Alcoa as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Good honest work, but be prepared to work more than expected, uncompensated. No other pros can be listed for this place

    Cons

Manager had family as a big wig. That is how "it" obtained the job. Completely incompetent and made employees know it.

    Advice to Management

Manager reviews. Too many good employees leaving for stale management.

I worked at Alcoa full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many large aerospace and industrial customers. Some of the best benefits around.

    Cons

Very high turnover, with longevity measured in months and not years. Professional staff are expected to work nights, weekends and holidays no matter what.

    Advice to Management

Treat your customers and their orders with respect. Some pretty shameful "prioritizing" for all the wrong reasons.

I worked at Alcoa full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are few to no Pro's being employed at ALCOA Cranberry PA (USA). Especially in Estimating, Engineering, and Project Management.

    Cons

Poor office managers, favoritism, lies, extremely high employee turnover, high Cost of Quality , poor product, once a year Black Friday, office managers take all the credit after employee has worked very hard on a specific project. Expect a "How Youuuuu" every morning. Cannot trust management, expect to be back stabbed and left out no matter how hard one Works unless you are a "friend".
ALCOA has a reputation in the Cranberry PA facility by the community as one of the worst employors.

    Advice to Management

Replace the previous TRACO office management with real, trustworthy, accountable, responsible, people orientated Managers. This would be the most equitable and smart decision ALCOA could make to improve the quality of employment. Quality Managers draw quality Employees. Recognize your employees when good performance is displayed. Pay your employees properly, and watch your Cost of Quality go down to manageable numbers as well as the high employee turnover.

    Pros

Attractive job title, benefits, future-oriented manufacturing.

    Cons

Pathologically disorganized, extremely poorly managed at the group level, dysfunctional team dynamics, no work/life balance. My job function, along with all of the aforementioned problems, went with the value-add company, Arconic after the separation from Alcoa.

    Advice to Management

"Lean" management/organization only works when efficient and dependable processes are in place to take the part of superfluous personnel. There's no "talent bench" here to speak of - hiring the minimum number of employees and working them to the breaking point repels good employees and leaves a company stuck with sick/bad ones. If you want to attract good talent, you've got to give them reasons to want to work there - anyone who can choose to leave, will do so. Also - being honest about job descriptions and job realities with your applicants would not be a bad idea: reputable companies already do that kind of thing, and this company ought to know better.

I worked at Alcoa full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Employees bond together over the unacceptable lack of support and resources from management. Everyone is in the same boat. Medical benefits are great. Brand recognition.

    Cons

Employees are extensively overextended with large scope projects without proper resources. Setup to fail from the beginning. Dinosaur age infrastructure. No IT support. Configuration control is almost non-existent. Management is clueless - no vision or direction, and no technical expertise either. High turnover rate. Hostile work environment. Problems with noncompliance! You're basically on your own.

    Advice to Management

Learn your own internal technical requirements. Provide resources and support to the in-house talent. Stop wasting money on outsourcing work scope due to poorly established processes. Listen to your employees and treat them with respect and professionalism as they deserve. Establish better processes and systems. Eliminate waste and nonconformance. Communication and hierarchy of the chain line must be improved.
