I worked at Alcoa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

health care benefits, tuition reimbursement, 401K match

    Cons

no leadership and terrible management; good ol' boy system - promotions (which are hard to come by here) are given out to those that say "yes" to everything and are willing to hide certain things in order to show upper management that everything is alright; majority of people hired are external and are not qualified for the role

    Advice to Management

Start kicking the wrong people off the bus and putting the right people on the bus - keeping incompetent and lazy people around is only going to make the good ones run out the door that much faster

    I worked at Alcoa full-time

    Pros

Understaffing provides opportunities to expand your knowledge and experience

    Cons

Understaffing creates a challenge to complete tasks or responsibilities to a professionally high level or to solve a problem to the level of not happening again.

    Advice to Management

Take one company shortcoming each month and resolve it? Repeat each month.

    Pros

I worked at Alcoa for over 5 years. During that time, Alcoa offered competitive compensation and benefits.

    Cons

Many departments were heavily resource constrained, both at the plant and corporate office locations.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to investing in top talent who will challenge status quo

I have been working at Alcoa full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The most competitive quality of the company is the benefit package which includes an annual bonus, 6% 401K match, and good health benefits.

    Cons

They will not give internal job candidates the pay they deserve for promotions to new positions. External candidates get a better deal.

    Advice to Management

Be fair. If someone inherits or gains more responsibilities, pay them for the new job they're doing.

    Pros

Good stability. Commitment to excellence in products and processes.

    Cons

Extreme amount of bureaucracy. Seperate BU's existed in extreme isolation. Mediocre work / life balance. As corporate as corporate gets.

    Advice to Management

Knock down some of that red tape! Because without it, there are a lot of great aspects of Alcoa that would become visible.
