I worked at Alcoa full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Changing to strictly commodity company. Seems to be doing well so far. Some management needs to be more aware of working with younger staff as the talent begins to retire.

    Cons

Long hours, high expectations, always attached electronically.

    Advice to Management

More flexibility and work life balance.

    I worked at Alcoa full-time

    Pros

Company has Good insurance along with some great 401 k . Pay was to notch for area. Decent plant management. Safety of employees was lacking though.

    Cons

I do not feel like the plant was really worried about employee safety and health. The managers never discussed it unless they had to.

    Advice to Management

I would suggest you Put safety as the true number one concern. The employees make good money so they won't complain or bring it up for fear of losing job.

I have been working at Alcoa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent health and retirement benefits, Very interesting technical industry including energy applications and military applications Good job security during average economic conditions.

    Cons

Very top down bureaucratic organization so it's hard to make big changes as an engineer. The work culture is set in it's ways, unorganized and unclear upward mobility. Work environment is outdated but updates are happening slowly.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in and reward innovation

I have been working at Alcoa full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Benefits and pay were ok, 6% 401(k) match and pension. The hourly workforce camaraderie made challenging work less stressful.

    Cons

Poor communication throughout company, local management flipflops on intiatives and cannot stick with anything long enough to see it succeed. Union workforce has select few who create dischord and negatively affect hourly to salary relations.

    Advice to Management

Review communication policies and set standards. Local management needs more oversight and accountability to be effective. Internal hiring should be used as a means to keep focus on safety and long term goals.

I worked at Alcoa (Less than a year)

    Pros

Talented employees who understand the goals. Good Communication from the top down. Wide arrange of software programs which capture necessary business and financial information.

    Cons

Many talented employees whom work in a box and seem to struggle with the big picture. Communication at the middle level, whether up or down is a challenge and has a twist of shop politics. With the many software programs it necessitates duplicate data entry and complicated merging, if even possible. Needs a Kaizan to fix this!

    Advice to Management

Invest leadership skills into middle management and hold them accountable. So many problems came away due to really poor communication and verbal abuse because what was being asked of them was not detailed enough for employees to provide what was actually being expected from them. This creates tension and confusion and lowers trust and respect on both ends. It really doesn't have to be this way.
