I have been working at Alden Research Laboratory full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The atmosphere is generally laid back and employees are given room to do their job the best way they see fit. There is no multi-layered hierarchy to prevent work from happening. If you have an idea, you're trusted and independence is valued. Everyone works toward a common goal. There is no one-upmanship happening. Management has an open door policy, and unlike other places, they actually do listen. The company is involved...

    Cons

With such a long, storied history, they don't do enough to promote all the good things they do for industry or in the community. It is also an industrial complex that has been grandfather into a residential neighborhood. Don't expect paved roadways to all the buildings housing models.

    Advice to Management

Do more to promote all the good Alden does and continue to give employees the independence to do good work.

Buildings could use some sprucing up.

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Alden Research Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Interesting and challenging fluid flow/component testing projects primarily related to power generation (hydro/nuclear/fossil/renewable). Management is doing a good job trying to diversify into new areas. Alden is a small company so there are a lot of opportunities to get involved in all aspects of a project from start to finish if you are ready and willing to take on the responsibility. 32 acre campus often referred...

    Cons

Small company so opportunities for advancement may not come as quickly as in some larger companies. Some projects require around the clock testing which can lead to stretches of long hours. Some of the laboratory facilities are getting a little beat-up from years of testing/projects.

    Advice to Management

Continue exploring new business areas to offer our services to. Invest more into maintaining and upgrading facilities. Communication with employees has been good but can always be improved. It would be great if Ownership and senior management could spend a little more time walking around checking in and talking with the staff.

    Pros

Nice co-workers, WAS very laid back, fun place to work. Good benefits and PTO. Enjoyable to work at

    Cons

Became to uptight and way too political. No one was a team player anymore. Couldn't trust anyone you worked with

    Advice to Management

Lighten up and more work will be done. More workers will be productive

I have been working at Alden Research Laboratory full-time

    Pros

This company is a great place to work! The variety of engineering work is amazing and you are exposed to so many facets of engineering from physical and numeric modeling to analysis and testing. The company solves engineering problems that make a difference to the Environment and Peoples lives. If you work hard, are a positive influence and stay focused you are rewarded with advancement... if you complain and moan...

    Cons

Sometimes you need to put in a long day if projects have tight deadlines and clients are visiting. Other than that I can't really think of anything...

    Advice to Management

Management is slow at getting rid of the dead weight and those employees who complain and moan about their position and pay. They sometimes care too much and try and change peoples attitude when it might be best to just get rid of people.

I have been working at Alden Research Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Projects are interesting and often challenging. If you want, you can be involved in a project from the proposal to the final report. I think the benefits are great. Management is easy to talk to. Test facilities are older and could use some sprucing up but they get the job done.

    Cons

Some projects have tight schedules and on occasion require around the clock testing. Alden is a small company so advancement can sometimes be slower than at a larger company where more opportunities exist for shifting/changing jobs.

    Advice to Management

Management's having an open door policy is great but don't forget that follow up after the fact is also very important.

I have been working at Alden Research Laboratory full-time

    Pros

Alden laboratory is a great place to work if you are looking for "hands-on" engineering. Designing, building, and testing physical models is exciting and rewarding. I work with a good team of people and have an excellent manager that "checks in" on a regular basis and encourages all employees to be their best.

    Cons

The physical company infrastructure is aging. Some of the warehouse buildings are older, and in need of repair.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work! I am thankful to have found such a wonderful engineering job.

I worked at Alden Research Laboratory for more than a year

    Pros

Free doughnuts, smart people, close to Worcester and the college scene and quite beautiful area in the summer.

    Cons

moldy, dusty buildings for hydraulic models, low pay, not well managed and if you don't have a PhD than you are a technician even if you have a BS in engineering, sad.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Alden Research Laboratory

    Pros

You get the chance to be involved in pretty much any project you want to, and you get to have your hands on every stage of the project. People can be approachable, if you talk to them in the right way (their way).

    Cons

When I arrived in the lab, the eye-wash station had never been connected, hazardous chemicals and equipment were not stored properly, and the workplace was messy, dirty, and in disrepair. When this was reported to my boss, he did nothing. After some time, I told his boss, which is when things happened. OSHA probably should have gotten involved instead. Part of my job included computational modeling - not CFD, but dynamic...
