    I worked at Alere part-time

    Pros

Most co-workers were nice, paid every 2 weeks on time, mostly friendly management

    Cons

Mundane work, working every Saturday, work can be super slow or super busy, very high turnover. When I started, I didn't know there was 1 other girl in my department. She was usually a no show or arrived very late and did not care about anything or anyone.

    Advice to Management

Up the salary and hire better quality employees.

I worked at Alere as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay. Overtime available (mostly forced). Nice facilities. I had terrible shift supervisors but a good department lead that I could go to for issues. As a contract employee I had no trouble taking time off as I did not have vacation or sick time through Alere. I worked swing shifts as well as 12 hour shifts and made OK money which is what I enjoyed the most about my employment here. The work isn't that bad if you don't mind doing the same things every day/week. Decent biotech experience as well. I worked up in the chemistry department so I had a better overall experience than workers down in manufacturing. They put up with a lot more bs and made a lot less money.

    Cons

Little room for advancement. In no way trying to sound bitter as I had no intention of promotions, but while I was there only the cute young girls who rubbed elbows with the bosses ever got interviews for higher up positions. Guess that's most corporate jobs though eh? Welcome to the real world kid. Job was extremely repetitive. Learned everything I was ever going to do within the first couple weeks and was bored after the first month. Co-workers and management was a mix. Although my department lead was awesome I rarely saw him. Most my time was spent with the shift supervisors who were dreadful. My department had three of them and two were incredibly petty and unprofessional. Other coworkers were decent, but many had been there for 5,10 and 20 + years and they just had a miserable way about them. Was kind of a drag work environment. Nothing too nasty between workers, but I just got this depressing and miserable feeling every time I went to work. That took a tole on me. Maybe that is just the corporate world. Also, they change up shift hours every couple months. Go from 8 hour shifts to 12 hours shifts and then back again later. Mix in weekend shifts as well. And if you are new then you will be the first to be sacrificed to overnight shifts or weekend shifts. I didn't mind this as I have no other responsibilities and I liked the extra bit of money, but if you have other work/school/family/responsibilities then be advised about this. Alere wasn't horrible. I wanted some decent money and put up with the company until I found something better. So it worked for me in that regard. But working here is in no way enjoyable or fulfilling. Its a business after all. The goal is to make a product and turn a profit. Your needs comes second (if that).

    Pros

Lots of onsite perks including a gym, cafeteria, work-out classes, etc. People are great and most really want to make a difference.

    Cons

Currently being bought out and going through a divestiture. Morale is lower than normal as people wait to see what happens. Not a lot of career growth overall.
