I have been working at Aleris International full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Coworkers do there best to get the job done with minimal leadership

    Cons

No consistency or direction from upper management, main concern is to do things faster with less supplies/materials. First concern is profit over safety and quality

    Advice to Management

Start looking at the long term and not the next quarters bottom line. Facility is more than your personal career stepping stone

    Pros

some great people, interesting work that is busy and rewarding. Great safety awareness program!

    Cons

in my experience, I had a horrible manager. He acted like a juvenile, would give me a task and then the next day ask if I was done...as an engineer it doesn't work that way. The language and treatment I received from my small engineering group was the most unprofessional experience I have had in my 30 years of engineering. Do NOT work at the Richmond plant in engineering.

    Advice to Management

you are great at the Safety Awareness but much work is needed on people skills, if you want to be a first class operation you need to treat people first class to get the best out of them and improve the horrible morale.

I worked at Aleris International full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

very well organize. there was not much moving around, your job was your job. management was easy going.

    Cons

maintenance was lazy, not a good place to work during the winter.

    Advice to Management

listen to your hourly employees a little bit more, help them out to make their jobs a little bit easier. close to none opportunities to move in within the company, especially if you are an hourly employee.

I worked at Aleris International full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

If you can survive their many plant shutdowns, tremendous opportunity for growth and advancement within the organization. - I can't speak for all of the plants, but Roxboro was a place where you could thrive... until corporate shut it down.

    Cons

Buying, consolidating, shutting down companies is their MO disguised as "doing away with redundant manufacturing". - No compassion or integrity from the corporate level when making these decisions.

    Advice to Management

I guess "business is business"... Your preach "core values", then you put people out of work and can not show up to face them while you expect them to "efficiently" shut down the plant on "your schedule"...

I worked at Aleris International full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits, overtime. These are the only things positive about the company. Other employees are great to work with. I enjoyed it!

    Cons

Management is more concerned about money then employee retention. A lot of turnover. Not very stable. They tell you they want you to succeed but don't pay education reimbursement. When you submit it and it goes through the channels, makes it up to management, they hold the paperwork. Have to ask several time to get it back. Never saw any reimbursement

    Advice to Management

Management needs to get a grip on processes the managers are trying to implement. Lack of communication leads to firings that shouldn't happen. The company is ran by the union so managers kiss butt to stay in good graces. You need to work on the communication style

I worked at Aleris International full-time

    Pros

They are very competitive with their compensation.

    Cons

No positive work/life balance or flexible work arrangements. Executives and management have an 'old boys club' attitude. They value bodies in offices, not actual work product. Employee satisfaction survey rated them extremely low.

    Advice to Management

Move with the times, offer flexibility and positive reinforcement to your employees.

    Pros

Former Fortune 500 international company. Offers sophisicated work. Great work/life balance.

    Cons

Company's management does not share information with all employees which can make people nervous.

    Advice to Management

Be inclusive and share more information with employees (understand some things are confidential).

    Pros

Competitive pay and benefits. Preaches safety and strives to change employee morale... but...?

    Cons

Old boy, arcane leadership style, breeds insecurity and stress among lower leadership and workforce.

    Advice to Management

Be genuine... or learn how to at least appear genuine and care about your staff. It's not 1942 any more!
