I have been working at Alexandria City Public Schools part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you enjoy working with kids this is a great start, particularly if you enjoy working with a diverse group. Flexibility is also a pro.

    Cons

It really depends on the school administration. In some schools, leadership and other staff demonstrate very little respect for the substitute teacher, this impacts student behavior towards substitute teachers.

    Advice to Management

Demonstrate more respect for substitute teachers. It impacts whether individuals decide to substitute for your school and it says a great deal about your school culture.

I have been working at Alexandria City Public Schools full-time

    Pros

You can see people trying everywhere. This is a district made up of educators that are really trying to do the best they can for their students.

    Cons

Demographically, ACPS has a tough population to teach (highest percentage of English Learners in the state, massive income gap between the haves and have-nots, minority-majority racial demographics). This plus a rather checkered history of district leadership creates a feeling of being the underdog of Northern Virginia school districts. This is a place where a lot of teachers begin their careers before high-tailing it to Arlington or Fairfax.

    Advice to Management

Teacher turn-over is abysmal. Part of that is the transient nature of the region, but other districts are far better at keeping their people than ACPS. It is time to a take a good and hard look at why people are leaving.

I have been working at Alexandria City Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Love working with the children of all ages K-12 it's a pleasure to have them ride the buses to hear them laughing and talking to each other on their way home

    Cons

Not getting a cost of living or the raise you deserve for the hard dedication you put in and the effort to make sure the kids are taken to school safely and return home safely.

    Advice to Management

Do better on training courses and pay increase base upon your work performance by the year.

I worked at Alexandria City Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Small district so there are more frequent trainings and more personal attention.
Very competitive salary for Northern Virginia area.
Diverse workplace and incredibly diverse student population.
    Funding for resources readily available.

    Cons

Not the most qualified staff in the district offices compared to the bigger school systems, trainings were often dull.
Schools are fairly unequal in terms of wealth distribution.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps sharing ideas and research for trainings with neighboring districts to grow the strongest teachers.

I have been working at Alexandria City Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Best pay for teachers in the DC Metro Area.

    Cons

No moral compass. Administration is only concerned with numbers, so district culture encourages passing students along.
    Very negative work environment=high turnover.

    Advice to Management

Teaching should come first and resources should be directed to remediating students rather than progressing them.

    Pros

I was a at a great school . Your experience as a teacher is very dependent on tour school. The pay for teachers with masters degrees is good.

    Cons

Lack of organization. There needs to be more streamlining between Central Office and schools.

    Advice to Management

Get on one accord. Make a plan and stick to it.
