I worked at Alfa Laval full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed culture, world class company, reasonable salary and benefits. For high performing engineers and researchers, there is opportunity to travel to different facilities and world wide.

    Cons

At the time i was there, the manufacturing facility in Wood Dale was poorly organized. They used legacy computer systems, and some of the managers spent too much time with office politics without bothering to understand how he manufacturing was done. This may have improved, as it's been a few years and I heard about management changes.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time walking the factory to make sure you understand the day to day operations. Move to 3D CAD with a modern ERP system if you haven't yet.

I worked at Alfa Laval (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible working hours that gives you time to bring and pick up kids at kindergarten etc. Global company giving you experience in interacting with colleagues around the world. Friendly corporate culture.

    Cons

"We are not leaders in compensation" is a corporate mantra, which basically means you get a low salary if you are not very skilled at negotiating. Basically no further education or external courses offered.

    Pros

Salary is ok for the area.

I worked at Alfa Laval full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Most people are quiet, conservative and task oriented to achieve clearly defined goals of their work position. The office culture is as a team where individuals perform within established constraints and well defined boundaries. The result is a very stable work environment for those who can follow direction.

    Cons

The company is ROI driven and functions financially very much as a holding company or investment banking entente. The opportunity for advancement is very much mentor driven.

I worked at Alfa Laval full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Pretty good benefits and pay structure. Bonus program for sales people instead of commissions will not keep pure-bred sales person satisfied. Good 401(k) plan and medical benefits.

    Cons

Couldn't manage an acquisition successfully if their lives depended on it. They depend on "systems" instead of people to the point of fostering employee abuse by lower managers. Their view is so long term that their true disregard for their employees is exposed by their reliance on dysfunctional managers and inadequate "systems".

    Advice to Management

Walk the engagement talk. Put some of the employees ideas into action that they can see so that its clear you have been listening.

I worked at Alfa Laval full-time

    Pros

    401k, time off, fair salary

    Cons

Do not trust management. They are out for themselves only. HR will do anything to help certain management get what they want, including sweep things under the rug. Comments were made that a female would be better at her job if she was married with kids because that provides life experience. Reported to HR and nothing came of it. Employee who made comments was promptly promoted. Its a mans world in Houston. HR is probably too busy gossiping to address actual issues.

Advice, do not accept a technical role here if you are a woman.

Read bonus agreement carefully. Have to not just meet, but exceed every category to get the full percentage. Know that if your bonus is X, you will likely only receive half of that.

    Advice to Management

Have some accountability for HR departments segregated from corporate. Employees know nothing happens if they go to local or even US HR, so they have no where to turn when issues arise. The inability to trust HR is creating an even bigger rift and allowing managers to get away with anything. Alfa Laval acquisitions have been a disaster for the acquired companies.

    Pros

Decent benefits, good people the vacation time and 401k are the best of what they have to offer. All and all great place to work.

    Cons

There was some tension between coworkers but nothing out of the ordinary. As long as you kept your head down and did your job all was good.
