Don't "use" contract employees to do the worst of the work, while full time staff are sailing thru

I have been working at Algonquin College (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great working environment, great staff. Always a pleasure going into work. They do great work, and help out a lot of people. From what I Hear the pay is average, and there is a lot of opportunity to grow.

    Cons

I am an Intern. Not very much negativity around when I am there.

I have been working at Algonquin College part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The opportunity to teach and help young people prepare for their careers is very rewarding. Looks great on a resume. Opportunity to practice presentation and facilitation skills. Some classrooms are very modern and well equipped. My co-ordinator is very nice.

    Cons

Each year the demands on part-time instructors increase, but the pay stays the same. More, younger students = larger classes = more marking, more admin, more emails, more issues, and harder to manage classrooms.
Students are becoming very demanding which means you are basically expected to be on call 18 hours a day and often deal with difficult and sensitive interpersonal and social issues.
They ask part-timers to do admin work (eg administer student surveys) that perm faculty could easily do.
Little hope for full time employment.
No recognition or compensation for any of the "extras" like planning / co-ordinating field trips, arranging guest speakers, special projects to create learning experiences, etc. but if a class must be cancelled due to illness or extremely bad weather you're not paid for it.

    Advice to Management

Realize and reward the value that part-timers bring to the college. We're the ones with one foot in the real world, and who are balancing 2 careers.
Students have changed, the job has changed, so too should the way part-time instructors are recognized. Consider a development program to identify dedicated high-performing part-timers to bridge them into full time positions related to their expertise.
Consider supporting part-time instructors with training to help them deal with difficult situations (students with personal issues, interpersonal problems, mental health crises, classroom violence, etc).

I have been working at Algonquin College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They pay instructors for meetings. The students are great.

    Cons

Part-time staff are treated as disposable. You can only work 10 months over 2 years. The pay at the language institute is far below what other academic institutions offer and the workload is heavy.

    Advice to Management

Work to treat staff fairly and pay them a fair wage for the amount of work you ask of them.
