Pros
- Fantastic company culture. "Work smarter, not harder" culture means that the company values employee's personal time but is focused on actually getting things done. - The company hosts a very diverse (age, ethnicity, background) population, lending itself to a refreshingly different style of startup than the ex-Facebook/Google brogrammer environment you see at other successful startups nowadays. - Really no competition. AlienVault's job is to teach the market why integrated security makes sense. If there wasn't a good story there this would be a huge negative. But with their product and solutions it's a big positive and lends itself to a "sandbox" environment for their product team. - Personable and approachable executive team.
Cons
- Despite the company growing beyond its humble startup origins, we're still learning how to instrument things like expense reporting in a scalable way. - To accomplish the "work smarter, not harder" mentality the company is populated by some very strong and ambitious personalities. The environment is not contentious or "Game of Thrones-y" by any means, but you will need to be very personally motivated in order to keep up. - Security is a hard field to get into unless you're genuinely interested in it. People here care a lot about security, so you should be similarly motivated (or interested enough to learn).

A really solid startup!
Nov 25, 2016 - Security Research Engineer in San Mateo, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Well funded, in an exciting stage. Top notch executive staff - they know how to build companies. Engineering processes are really clean and the devops team is very cutting edge which makes developers happy. I worked on the labs team which was a very autonomous team the CTO admired and empowered. Almost no bs meetings, for engineers and researchers anyway. The marketing team and sales teams are beastly machines. Seriously experienced leadership for those groups as well.
Cons
If you're not in Austin, it is an uphill (losing) battle. As is true with most startups, talent is pushed to the limits, often little focus on individual growth and what you "want" to work on- You will work on whatever you are effective at. Recruiting is very informal. For a startup, this is truly a short list of cons - fixable too. If you don't stand strong And block out vacation time, no one will for you. So make sure to take a break!

Cons
It is not for the faint of heart... if you like a fast paced and challenging environment with incredible upside and opportunity to excel then this place might be perfect for you!

Pros
-Free parking -Free wifi -Snacks in the break room -Green walls -Flat screen TV's -Nice team members outside of the sales team
Cons
- Feels like a reality tv show (with extra alcohol) mixed with Michael Scott and The Office minus all the funny moments. - Toxic work environment - Deceptive management team - Employees are used as pawns - If you voice any concern regarding any of these issues, you will get black balled - I've witnessed “character assassination,” and I’ve had management ask me to make a false complaint to HR in order to help justify a firing. I didn’t do it, but it made me aware of what kind of characters are here. - Leading with fear and public embarrassment are managements strongest tools - Why isn't there any awesome reviews on the sales side from someone who has something real to say, and from someone who has been working here for longer than a year? - One too many family members and friends work here who obviously get major benefits - Everything here is fake. Promotions, the presidents club, etc are similar to the WWE, they're staged, and rigged. It's all been predetermined. - It's obvious this place is built on small tribes and the "cool kids." That's who gets the best leads/deals, and that's who gets put on a fast track for promotion. - Every company has some disgruntled employees, but I've never worked for one who has this many. These guys really know how to make enemies...

Pros
Free candy, soda and booze. Very competitive compensation, with commission. You have the potential to make a lot of money here. If you are a cute blonde, they may make concessions for you, no matter how bad you are at your job.
Cons
You do not want to work here. The product is ok, but the people are just a few cameras short of a messed up reality TV show. Alienvault is bleeding talent like a stuck pig and you are unlikely to find anyone here that has been here for more than a year or two, because nobody who has actually experienced this train wreck wants to be here. All the old timers and big brains are gone, and all that's left are the hopeless koolaid sippers and the kinds of snakes that thrive in cutthroat work environments. They may get a few suckers in and keep them around like Stockholm syndrome but by and large they do not care about integrity, or about people. They will use you like a dog toy until they're done with you, and then you are nothing, and nothing you ever did for the company matters.

A pretender in the infosec industry
Jan 18, 2018 - Technical Position in San Mateo, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Some nice people here, or used to be if they haven't left yet. Unlimited PTO, but only if your manager lets you use it. Had a good manager--got me a good raise and fought for me.
Cons
There is nothing technically interesting about these products. Products don't work, except OTX. Toxic and sexist environment. Chief People Officer wasn't hired to improve working with "people." No room for advancement, and lateral moves are discouraged or squashed. Company is cheap when it comes to expenses. CEO does hand waving instead of saying actual numbers at all hands meetings. Sales defines how things are done. Engineering is allowed to do whatever it wants. The PM team is solid, but they have no political clout, so you have the horrible environment that exists. The upper management doesn't care about the individual contributors, and there is a significant amount of micromangement in most departments.

Pros
The product is very affordable and good for the mid market. If you like free snacks then its worth the micro management.
Cons
Sales leadership is horrible from the top down, unattainable quota, only care about transactions and sell discounts instead of value. If you are familiar with Solarwinds similar toxic culture then you want to avoid at all cost. With recent VP of Sales leaving the AE teams essentially now report to CRO which has no concern for their reps. High turnover because quotas are not achievable, negotiate a large base salary if you want to work here. Very Bro culture with only a couple women on the sales team, its a toxic environment to work day in day out, if you think you can help change the culture and navigate the politics then it could be for you, it is a great product and does have a lot of potential in the future years if there is a complete reorg of the Sales floor.

Pros
pros: - Some very smart and talented people work here (for now) - Unlimited PTO - Great health insurance, with low deductible and low employee cost - Very lax dress code - Great market position. - They could (if they got their act together) have tremendous potential
Cons
cons: - No 401K match - No stock options - The product is pretty phoned-in, and has really nothing of value compared to other solutions - it's just cheap. - Lot of turnover recently, and it doesn't show much sign of stopping any time soon. - Management leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the time, they're just an extension of the sleazy sales team. They facilitate almost nothing and provide very little value. - This company does not care about its people. We're all just consumable resources. - They offer incentives for making sales, and that's it. No career development, no classes, nothing. And that's a problem in this field where technology is constantly evolving. - They are very petty and bitter about loyalty. Even though they won't invest in your career, they will write you off and treat you like you're worthless the moment they find out you're leaving.

Career Growth and Aggressive Compensation
Mar 26, 2018 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- AlienVault is an ideal place to work if you're a hardworking, self-starter, who has no problem leaning on the company provided support avenues when you need a hand - The value add of USM is undeniable, and the positioning the company and software has in the security space is tough to beat - ideal for any sales person who knows their craft - With the market position mentioned above, zero prospecting, steady inbound leads, and sales engineering support, it's hard to find a software sales position that matches up - Rock solid benefits package - Meritocracy based culture: If you do well, you will be compensated, recognized, and offered avenues of growth within the company.
Cons
No cons that are any different from any other software startup - primarily, change (and in the end, it's for the better).
