I have been working at Alkermes (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Great benefits and compensation.

    Cons

Restrictive work environment that does not promote collaboration or sharing of information. Business only wants personnel who perform their work and who will not provide feedback into how the process may be improved.

    Advice to Management

Consider allowing staff to seek mentors in cross functional teams. Break down the barriers within the different divisions in an effort to promote transparency and promote cross organizational collaboration.

I have been working at Alkermes full-time

    Pros

Some good people with experience who want to do their job well. The company could be on the verge of huge growth.

    Cons

Management is not accessible. There are no open door policies. Long timers do not actually have experience in their role and/or level. I've heard several people with the same experience: "We need your to help get us to the next level". However once in the role, status quo is the desired state. And if you don't agree, you are bullied into submission.

    Advice to Management

Listen to those who have experience in the topic. Have an open door policy. Create a culture of collaboration; stop the bullying.

I worked at Alkermes (More than a year)

    Pros

Alkermes is a small, but growing, biotech with a fair product pipeline. Compensation and benefits are good, flex time (department dependent) is great, co-workers are solid. Science is respected, and you will have plenty of opportunities to develop business agility during your time there.

    Cons

Hang on for a foot stompin’ good time! Oh, wait, no; that’s just someone in the MI wing throwing a temper tantrum. For as much potential as Alkermes possesses, it’s unclear whether it will ever successfully actualize it, or whether internal politics will continue to undermine the company. Individuals who are abusive towards colleagues and staff should be exited from the organization, not retained or rewarded. Senior management, by way of their complacency, has cultivated an environment steeped in disrespect and the Peter Principle, which has caused many talented, collaborative individuals to take their skills elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Employees (at all levels) need career development pathways made available to them. That, and sensible, merit-driven promotions would aid substantially in talent retention. Consider the mid-level leaders who are representing you, and the message that their behavior sends – some directors/departments are a joy to work with, others act like schoolyard bullies and leave much to be desired. Pay attention to lower levels within your organization; they have the capacity to add a great deal, but often go unheard and fear management retaliation.

Interesting pipeline and technology. Employees are generally friendly and collaborative. Casual work environment.

    Cons

Top-down communication is poor. You're either liked and promoted or dis-liked and included in the yearly layoff. Little spent on professional growth and training.

    Advice to Management

Increase communication and exchange of information at all levels.

    Pros

Decent holiday parties. Small pharma mentality.

    Cons

People who are offensive or abusive should not be tolerated in any way. Alkermes rewards bad management behavior, does nothing to rid itself of the people who are self-serving and dictatorial, and promotes an uncaring disrespectful atmosphere toward its employees.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the lowest levels of the organization. They often go unheard, and fear management retaliation.
