I have been working at Alkermes full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly family feel in the plant. Lots of good people trying to make a real difference. Benefits like onsite gym, fitness classes , company doctor and excellent personal development opportunities make this the best employer in town

    Cons

Can be slightly dated in some areas, but keen to change. Merger has created some cultural and process divisions but these are gradually fading.

    Advice to Management

Don't try to do too much organisational change all at once

    Pros

Great company to work for. If you propose a good idea's, it will usually be implemented; this pro-active culture is encouraged.

    Cons

Company can be too ambitious and sometimes aims to achieve too much e.g. commitments can be made at / by Snr. Mgt. without first having checked if timelines are possible to achieve.

    Advice to Management

Consult with the people who have to deliver as early as possible

    Pros

Great workplace, very supportive of family and life balancing. Solid benefits and competitive salary. Friendly people. Small pharmaceutical culture/atmosphere

    Cons

The merger with Elan is taking time to balance the corporate cultures. Turnover trends low which can limit opportunity as growth is slow.

    Pros

Data driven. Results oriented. Technical challenges abound. Input is valued.

    Cons

More QA than one would expect.

    Advice to Management

Stay aggressive with development programs. Keep a handle on the Quality Systems, but watch for trival wasted efforts that don't add value.

    Pros

The company offers flexible work arrangements, room for growth, a highly collaborative atmosphere, a solid pipeline, and an approach rooted in science but run for a long term profit.

    Cons

It's not always clear how the different parts of the company can work together given the different cultures at the different locations.

    Advice to Management

    Improve vertical communication among layers.

I worked at Alkermes full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Compensation is above average and despite being over 300 employees on site still has company outing & Christmas party each year.. The scientists are very talented. Company's aggressive approach has been rewarded with the stock nearly tripling over the last three years. Enocourags personal growth and provides the opportunities readily & frequently.

    Cons

Highly political environment. It is critical for your career and possible employment status to align yourself with key managers and personnel. Once out of favor nothing will restore your "good" status. Emotional Intelligence is much more important than technical skill to do well. Company has become very compartmentalized.

    Advice to Management

Rewarding only the politically savvy at the expense of losing highly talented technical staff will not allow the company to sustain its highly successful approach it has used to date. The compartmentalization of functions & departments currently occurring is leading to silos and will erode overall effectiveness of the US sites.

"Innovative R&D company that demands the best science and work"

I have been working at Alkermes full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Alkermes tries (and successfully) does a lot with a small R&D team. Each person is a highly-valued member of their team and contributes significantly to each project and has a direct impact to that project's development. New ideas are usually welcomed if they are scientifically supported. The workforce is relatively young and makes for a more fun office environment. There are a good amount of managers that care about their direct reports' career development and overall work/life balance. Company does a good job of trying to celebrate achievements with employees and upper management seems to value and be open to questions and comments from the lower-level employees.

    Cons

Because Alkermes supports so many projects with such a small R&D force, the workload can be at times, quite heavy, with more than several instances where vacation time has been suspended in order to meet project deadlines months before. Career development can be stymied or ground to a halt depending on the manager you have. Some are fantastic, others can be less than desirable.

    Advice to Management

A stronger focus on career development and promoting existing workers across all departments, not just a few departments would do much to help retain some talent that has been lost over the years. Increased support/funding for additional R&D positions would help return the workload to a more manageable scale for the majority of employees, as people tend to burn out and look for other opportunities, despite having respect for managers, the company and their work. Some departments/managers are fantastic, while others leave much to be desired and seem like a completely different company with less than ideal values.

    Pros

Alkermes is a great sized company that provides the flexibility and individual value of each employee while having the resources to support initiatives and programs.

    Cons

As a small biotech there are limited career growth opportunities in the short term, but future growth should afford significant career advancement options
