I worked at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The staff are supportive of each other and work together to provide a safe and caring environment for the patients. Professional teamwork and very talented surgeons in a large level one trauma center

    Cons

No visible, qualified or educated leadership to support the dedicated staff. Tired union workings delay changes to protect senior seniority. A lot of mandating for some. Disorganization and high turnover is worse since the Highmark affiliation

    Advice to Management

Current staff would do better with acknowledgement for their efforts, opportunity for education and advancement. Favoritism for the "same old" kind of management that works with and protects the union representative in exchange for minimal work assignments acting in a management role without the title or any responsibility is inappropriate and demoralizing

I worked at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Located on Pittsburgh's Northside near downtown. Lower level workers are generally very nice, dedicated people, trying to provide excellent service even without the tools or support that they need.

    Cons

General culture of intimidation of staff by managers in many depts., belittling the employees and being verbally abusive, scheduling them for unreasonable shift changes, changing rules arbitrarily and without notice or documentation... Growing increasingly negative atmosphere of punishment and threats to get as much work as possible from under-staffed overworked employees for as little pay as possible.

    Advice to Management

Look hard at the SUPERVISORS who have high turnovers of the people under their control. People don't say the real reason that they leave for fear of being blackballed in the industry. A lazy, unfair, mean boss drives away more people than "better opportunity" entices them to leave.

I have been working at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great training. Excellent attendings. A large amount of pathology. Lots of radiology, surgical, and pathology correlation.

    Cons

It can be very busy at times, which is also great in obtaining great residency training. The winter conditions are something you have to be willing to deal with.

    Advice to Management

Work well with others. Must have excellent communication with physicians, patients, nurses, and others involved with taking care of the patient.

I worked at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

this hospital does offer good benefits, pay is not that bad, and you do get vacation time.

    Cons

They don't know how to treat their employees, in many departments

    Advice to Management

Get a grip and get the hospital back to how it used to be.

I have been working at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with who really care about what they do and the patients they serve.

    Cons

Poor communication of strategies and objectives (and just poor communication to employees in general)
Many positions with little room for career advancement.
A lot of bad attitudes from top to bottom.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the appearance and function of your facility more than branding on TV. Allow your employees a little autonomy (and more attractive pay) and see the difference it makes in the pride they take in their work.

I have been working at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - excellent benefits

    Cons

    - lousy paid time off accrual rates
    - low pay (lack of merit-based pay increases)
    - bad parking situation(s)
    - lack of opportunities for career advancement
    - nepotism
    - too many unnecessary/nebulous positions
    - intrusive/obstructive IT policies restrict ability to do job (nothing is more important than preventing a data breach!)

    Advice to Management

Spend a little less time and money developing your 'brand' (e.g. paying a couple million to design a logo) and invest in your facilities (the wifi is terrible), innovation (research endeavors) and the people who keep your hospital functioning on a daily basis.
