I worked at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Flex Time in Collections Department

    Cons

Constantly changing policies. Change workload to whatever it is they want you doing you never get a chance to complete a project.

    Advice to Management

Assigning work to people who have never worked the payer before. Some people have a lot of experience with that payer and could be a great benefit to you but you have that person not working what they know best.

I worked at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

You can learn a lot in Vascular Interventional and Neuro Radiology! The doctors that I worked with were great, and so were my coworkers! Beyond that, nothing was good about this place stay away!

    Cons

They worked us to death, I felt it was an unsafe environment for the patients. One day I worked 20 hours straight and was called back in after I got home to do a stroke procedure extremely unsafe. Management does not care at all! Call was ridiculous! I would never work for AHN or Allegheny General Hospital, again ever! They don't deserve a great employee like me.

    Advice to Management

Care about your employees more! Take care of them so they can take care of your patients!

I worked at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Located on Pittsburgh's Northside near downtown. Lower level workers are generally very nice, dedicated people, trying to provide excellent service even without the tools or support that they need.

    Cons

General culture of intimidation of staff by managers in many depts., belittling the employees and being verbally abusive, scheduling them for unreasonable shift changes, changing rules arbitrarily and without notice or documentation... Growing increasingly negative atmosphere of punishment and threats to get as much work as possible from under-staffed overworked employees for as little pay as possible.

    Advice to Management

Look hard at the SUPERVISORS who have high turnovers of the people under their control. People don't say the real reason that they leave for fear of being blackballed in the industry. A lazy, unfair, mean boss drives away more people than "better opportunity" entices them to leave.

I worked at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The staff are supportive of each other and work together to provide a safe and caring environment for the patients. Professional teamwork and very talented surgeons in a large level one trauma center

    Cons

No visible, qualified or educated leadership to support the dedicated staff. Tired union workings delay changes to protect senior seniority. A lot of mandating for some. Disorganization and high turnover is worse since the Highmark affiliation

    Advice to Management

Current staff would do better with acknowledgement for their efforts, opportunity for education and advancement. Favoritism for the "same old" kind of management that works with and protects the union representative in exchange for minimal work assignments acting in a management role without the title or any responsibility is inappropriate and demoralizing

I have been working at Allegheny General Hospital full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great training. Excellent attendings. A large amount of pathology. Lots of radiology, surgical, and pathology correlation.

    Cons

It can be very busy at times, which is also great in obtaining great residency training. The winter conditions are something you have to be willing to deal with.

    Advice to Management

Work well with others. Must have excellent communication with physicians, patients, nurses, and others involved with taking care of the patient.
