I have been working at Allegheny Health Network

    Pros

Good health insurance and PTO policy. Decent pay and 401k contribution. A few fantastic employees willing to teach, coach, and mentor younger staff. One or two fantastic managers that believe in their employees and projects.

    Cons

Morale is incredibly low - Constant layoffs (only to rehire several months later) do not help. Management is short-sighted, out of touch, and place no value on work ethic, loyalty, or performance. A huge wave of recent high level departures is telling of the organizations future outlook.

    Advice to Management

Don't be so quick to layoff 10% of the workforce when it's obvious you'll be rehiring for half of those positions in three future months.

I worked at Allegheny Health Network full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Great experience and people to work with. Many people working toward the same goal of improvement of health and research. Decent pay, health benefits, and PTO.

    Cons

Realitively non existent retirement and poor raises. They have a long way to go before they are competitive with other companies. Terrible set up for parking and commuting from parking garage.

I have been working at Allegheny Health Network full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Great coworkers, quick hiring process. Decent pay and benefits package. Large organization that has many job opportunities at any given time. There's a spot for many different employment needs.

    Cons

Same trouble as with most health care settings, short on staff. Not the highest pay grade in the area. Some areas can have a lot of staff turn over but that happens with a lot of organizations.

I worked at Allegheny Health Network full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Met some great co-workers, good experience working on implementation of a well-designed new data warehouse. Decent pay rate and vacation allowance. Work itself was interesting.

      Cons

Unrealistic expectations about how much time staff should be available to management during out of office hours. On-call is one thing, but it needs to be balanced with some consideration that your employees have lives, families, hobbies, etc. and arguably (on a normal week) 128 hours they should expect to be free to do whatever they want. Also, I was buried under layers of multiple managers, directors, technical lead...

      Advice to Management

Give a little more thought to whether something can wait a day or a few hours to be fixed (these aren't the hospitals' life support systems -- they're reports on financial and operations metrics that are fairly predictable from day to day), or if it's an actual system crisis worthy of robbing employees' whole nights and weekends.

I have been working at Allegheny Health Network full-time for more than a year

      Pros

Decent pay and benefits, nothing great - just decent

      Cons

Zero communication from management as well as between staff. Managers are less than qualified and are extremely over burdened. Purchasing is a joke, it takes forever to receive common items that are stocked at local businesses. There is no petty cash or operationg capital of any kind to allow for purchasing supplies necessary for the day-to-day operation of a multi-million dollar corporation.

      Advice to Management

Your employees are qualified professionals capable of performing their duties with little to no supervision. Streamline your purchasing and allow employees to purchase what they need to do their jobs. Give employees the reigns and let them make decisions how best to perform their duties, you might be ssurprised how well the business runs once you stop micromanaging.
