I worked at Allen & Gerritsen full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Weekly happy hour, cool perks like unlimited vacation and good insurance/401k options. Because they're so concerned with being cool, you'll get to enjoy a "chill" culture that involves doing "fun stuff" during office hours. They are pretty transparent with what's going on with the overall company and have regular meetings to update employees on bigger vision/financials.

    Cons

The two offices aren't anything alike and it makes it really awkward when everyone is forced to act like we're all a happy family. They act like they want to invest in talent but will ditch someone as soon as it's no longer serving them rather than addressing tough issues head on with loyal employees. They don't look out for their own and will continue to dump work on employees even if their workload is already filled...

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to be cool and make your employees feel valued for their actual work - maybe a promotion or a raise from time to time. Free beer only goes so far.

    Pros

Nice neighborhood (in Philly and Boston). Good people work there...at least at the mid to lower ranks. Some cool stuff going with video and labs but the agency doesn't seem like a fit for those departments.

    Cons

Can't hang on to their clients....even the bad ones. Winning new business is a struggle and non existent. Not sure how they will survive this. CEO needs to let people make decisions without his intervention. He makes ALL final decisions related to almost everything and that doesn't reflect well on their track record.

    Advice to Management

Play with passion. Stop going through the the motions when it comes to managing clients and pitching new business. CEO needs to let the leaders actually lead. Pick a direction and go for it...words like "inventiveness" and "innovation" have no meaning unless you give them meaning.

I worked at Allen & Gerritsen full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The people here are fantastic. There's camaraderie and real friendships in these walls. There's also a lot of autonomy; if you need to work from home or take a day outside of the office, you're free to. The unlimited vacation policy is also a really great perk that not a lot of agencies are offering.

    Cons

Leadership has made some bad hires in recent years, and since they're in leadership positions (VP+), they are weighing down morale, and the work. Andrew, the CEO, seems to want to bite off more than the agency can chew; I'm not sure his quest to expand into other cities by 2020 is realistic or in the agency's best interests. The work feels stale, and the company's "Culture Code," which touts the agency as a collection...

    Advice to Management

Don't hesitate to do what needs to be done with those bad fits - it is clear who clashes with the agency, and it needs to be fixed sooner rather than later. Take a vested interest in your people vs. trying too hard to be an independent agency of W+K or Droga5 caliber; if you invest in the people, truly listen to them, and help them grow, amazing work and accolades will follow. Simply saying that the agency is something...

I worked at Allen & Gerritsen for more than 3 years

    Pros

Fantastic people that are fun to be with and learn from, great mentorship program, exciting to see and do new things, helpful management and open-door policy with CEO. Almost always extra food/drink lying around.

    Cons

Still some lasting tensions with acquired Philly office caused by strange reporting structures across offices, new business hasn't been won in a while and seems out of touch with what the rest of the agency does, strategy team is a GODDAMN DISASTER thanks to some incompetent leadership across offices. Branded entertainment division is a confusing, profitless over-investment of both time and money.

    Advice to Management

Bridge the gap between new business and creative - they're pitching stuff that they're not excited about. Stop being so concerned with being a cool place to work and actually make it a place to WORK.

    "Internship"

    StarStarStarStarStar
      Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Allen & Gerritsen

      Pros

Friendly office atmosphere, scooters, cereal. Cool location at Boston's seaport district - great view.

      Cons

Pay -- $10 per hour is low balling it if you ask me Vague goals, felt removed from actual business...hardly any training Found myself twirling my thumbs at my desk for hours even when I asked for work to do...

      Advice to Management

Stop trying to be so "cool" and a great place to work at. It's almost force-fed "coolness". Focus on being a real company and the coolness will come with success

I worked at Allen & Gerritsen full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

ummm free celtics tickets- if thats your thing. Most of the "day to day workers" are enjoyable to work with, but management is pretty out of touch. they do love to drink which is fun.

      Cons

CEO does NOT know how to manage people (at least he takes classes on how to manage people...). some departments- specifically "branded entertainment" drive no ROI but seem to have unlimited budget before that it was the social team. Money pits that CEO loves. when you are trying to get a small raise (with your managers backing) and it doesnt get approved its disheartening to see billsheets for how much $$ is spent on...

      Advice to Management

Instead of trying to get A level clients (when you have C level) go out and find those intermediate clients and don't be afraid of focusing more on B2B which is what this agency should be but those brands aren't "cool" enough for CEO, yet they pay the bills.

      Pros

Hardworking people who are passionate about what they do, unlimited vacation, usual "cool" agency perks like weekly happy hours

      Cons

Going through a weird growth period - not winning a ton of business, but everyone is still working long hours, but without feeling like we're getting anywhere

I worked at Allen & Gerritsen

      Pros

It was fun place to work but felt that management couldn't work together to push the agency forward. Almost everyone was nice, of course there were the entitled people who walked around like the were God's gift...but, hey...its an advertising agency

      Cons

Didn't feel driven or get inspired from bosses/supervisors.

      Advice to Management

Take junior level people more seriously, they have fresh insight. Don't accept client who cannot see your creative vision or who want to tell you want to produce...you'll simply end up losing them.
