I worked at Allen & Overy for more than 5 years

    Pros

The firm is competitive in terms of salary and benefits as compared to other NYC firms. The people who work there are very collegiate.

    Cons

The office really feels like a satellite of the main office in London. Certain departments are poorly run - with no real leadership.

I worked at Allen & Overy for more than 3 years

      Pros

Good atmosphere in general with people.

      Cons

Lack of transparency, salary differences between people with same experience but different practice groups, lack of recognition of effort, long hours!! Policy of undermining the lower employees so they will give up to their personal lives. DO NOT RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE

      Advice to Management

Value hard work and long hours, it is the least you can do. Be transparent with your own team. Dont have such great ego.

      Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Allen & Overy full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Learn a lot and opportunity to be involved in world class deals and great experiences (meeting clients in top positions etc.) Salary is quite good for recent graduates. Good lunch and dinner options (in house). Includes free bike, gym card. Many events (drinks, dinners, parties) and cool colleagues (young and smart).

      Cons

No work life balance at all. Management and partners are only cash focused and don´t care about their associates.

      Advice to Management

care more about your employees, especially in the long run.

      Doesn't Recommend

I worked at Allen & Overy full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

Great training, interesting work (even as a first seat trainee), a very sociable firm with an informal culture, learning from the best. Pay is good.

      Cons

Consistently long hours - especially in the banking department. There is no limit to the hours that you are expected to put in, and the firm doesn't even pretend to aim for a work/life balance.

      Advice to Management

A hefty paycheck isn't enough to retain the best talent. More needs to be done to make the job sustainable.

I have been working at Allen & Overy full-time for more than 3 years

      Pros

By law firm standards, very innovative. Work is top tier. Open teams. Relatively flat hierarchy.

      Cons

Hours can be unforgiving. Not many high quality secondment opportunities. Feedback is weak at the best of times.

      Advice to Management

Develop your staff better, don't see them as just tools to be trained once a year.
