I worked at Allen & Overy full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good name on CV and other standard reasons to work at a magic circle type firm.

    Cons

London is fine and I loved working with other offices but the Belfast office is a joke. The HR staff there are not impartial, just there to kiss management's backside. They don't support you in anything and personal issues are taken straight to your manager without consent. Managers without training or qualifications to lead are making life hell for their underlings. Degrading treatment at times. One Christmas the...

    Advice to Management

Get your act together and train managers in how to actually manage. The Belfast office is literally a revolving door of people leaving. Had one person leave after barely two weeks on the job as it was so awful. They just don't care about the staff. Also need to be clear on their flexible working policies, in some departments you would be laughed out of the building if you asked for it.

    Pros

Glossy window dressing (restaurant, gym, GP), nice offices in an interesting location and some really excellent, hard-working people in all departments

    Cons

It's a real shame that management don't appreciate support staff. Hugely 'us and them' environment - legally qualified staff get management roles they're not suited to, my virtue of the fact they're lawyers. Lawyers get headline-grabbing pay rises and despite management spilling out cliches about 'one firm', 'success is due to everyone's contribution', neither progression nor pay for support staff backs that up. I've...

    Advice to Management

Realise that lawyers without billing systems, IT systems, marketing and revenue support etc is worth nothing. You can't get by on gloss in the long term- eventually the quality of your support staff will go through the floor.
