I have been working at Allen & Shariff full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

On the engineering side, the team members are experienced and willing to teach. There is a lot of respect in the office, that starts at the top with a caring CEO. The typical projects we work on range from large, high-rise commercial buildings, to schools, to ice cream stores. So you get to touch on a lot of different types of buildings.

    Cons

Open office layout is good for some people but distracting for others.

    Advice to Management

With new management in the Columbia office, it is looking bright. But the office could go through an archived paper purge; we have nearly all files on our server so there is no need to keep as much paper drawings and documents filed away around the office. It would make the office much more "lean" without wasted space for documents that will never be looked at again.

I worked at Allen & Shariff full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company is very small which creates a close environment with all the employees. They have some very qualified employees, the CEO is great and tries to get to know everyone on a personal level. They also have lots of good projects.

    Cons

They do not have a good training program for someone new to the field, many employees there expects you to know a lot of things that comes from years of experience. The electrical department only had 2 people which made it really hard to ask for help.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people, Set up a good training program, Don't hire inexperienced people if you don't have resources and time to train them

    Pros

Allen & Shariff has a very supportive work environment that encourages individual growth thru lunchtime seminars and training courses.

    Cons

Columbia office has had some difficulty in the past maintaining employees but has recently hired some excellent and qualified people which has resulted in the office being on the upswing.

    Pros

    The production staff was great!

    Cons

TOO High of a turn over! It is painful to watch a company that was a premier engineering company go down as far as they have. I will not recommend this firm to anyone to do business with or to work for.

    Advice to Management

If the management team does not see the light soon there will not be an office in

I have been working at Allen & Shariff full-time

    Pros

Allen & Shariff is a company with the potential to be amazing. They offer flexible hours, have a committed and hardworking staff, and a lot of knowledge within the organization. The company provides decent compensation, and a good work/life balance.

    Cons

There aren't unified processes in place, so jobs aren't all done the same way. Staff isn't trained thoroughly, and management doesn't provide beneficial direction. Understaffed, so workflow can be a bear.

    Advice to Management

Spend time hiring the right people for the job, and train the staff for success. Create an on-boarding, training, and systematic process so jobs run more smoothly and everyone is on the same page. You should put more effort into making employees feel valued.

    I worked at Allen & Shariff full-time

    Pros

Company has great, hard working employees, good benefits package including generous PTO. Division heads are great to work for!

    Cons

Employees are not valued by Corporate Management. There is no trust in the employees or the Division heads and they are not treated as assets as they should be.

    Advice to Management

If something doesn't change, all valuable employees will leave (a lot already have). Start paying attention and actually deal with the real problems, the biggest one being in Corporate Management.

    Pros

Good group of colleagues to work with. Plenty of opportunities to advance. Competitive salaries and great benefits. Earning bonuses and profit sharing.

    Cons

Heavy work load sometimes because certain departments are short staffed. Some people are expected to carry more load than others. Health insurance could cover more for family.
