I worked at Alliant Lake City Small Caliber Ammunition full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Personal pride providing products directly supporting the U.S. Military and national defense.

    Cons

A continuous trend of poor management decisions that led to numerous layoffs, while at the same time growing the senior management ranks. Way too many six figure $ Directors that continued to grow as the workforce shrank resulting in the workforce being Unionized.

    Advice to Management

Lean out the upper management ranks and return the majority of Directors back to Manager status.

    Pros

Good co workers thats about it, not much positive here.

    Cons

Oh where to start..... consistent poor decision making by upper management, if it has no logic than thats they do. Mediocre benefits, too much ot, recently voted union in so hopefully place gets better. Haven't got raise in years, company dont follow their own rules and procedures, no room for advancement, top heavy they have way too many 6 figure directors doing nothing. Been going downhill fast for years, thats why employees voted in a union

    Advice to Management

    Get common sense

I have been working at Alliant Lake City Small Caliber Ammunition full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Insurance, and a lot of good hardworking wage employees

    Cons

Management shows a lot of favoritism, no raises in a few years, too much nepotism. No life outside work because of constant overtime.

    Advice to Management

Start realizing you have a lot of good hardworking wage employees that have worked hard to put management where they are. Give back respect, raises and bonus to those who truly deserve it.

    Pros

    Support our Warfighters !

    Cons

Poorest managed Corporation I have ever worked for. How the defense department continues to let ATK manage Lake City I don't understand. They knew the contract was under bid, Quality No longer existing, terminating or forceing there best employees to seek other employment because of very poor Management decisions ! ATK is a prime example of you get what you pay for . It's sad that Lake City a Highy respected plant since 1941 has been allowed to be ruined by a corporations greed !

    Advice to Management

Get out of Lake City, Let someone in there that truely cares about the War Fighters !

    Pros

The pay and benefits are good...for now until that gets taken away.

    Cons

Upper management is grossly incompetent. They don't listen to advice, think they know everything, and mismanage the talent that they have. Because of this, this particular location will probably suffer serious losses in revenue, employees, and possible get the whole place shut down.

    Advice to Management

I doubt they read this but here goes. The whole culture needs to change. Failing to inform your employees about what is going on has created an environment of fear and mistrust. Failing to listen to employees who have done their particular jobs for 20+ years over some young college kid who has no real world experience in manufacturing is a huge problem, especially when these "experiments" are costing hundreds of thousands even millions of dollars because some kid said it was theoretically possible to improve on a process that has worked for 50+ years. The person running the machine can tell you that it won't work because it's been tried before and are ignored. And even when a promising project is started, you don't give anyone the required time to prove it out. I can't count the number of projects that are left hanging incomplete over the years because you won't let them finish. How much money has been wasted because of this? Eliminating quality was another huge mistake that will cost this company money and contracts in the future. Sure it saves money now, but those quality checks were put in place for a reason by people much smarter than you. Quality and safety should be job #1 but cost and profits are to you guys. If you show the employees that you care about them and the product you put out, then cost and profits will follow, but apparently you all missed that class in school. Which is exactly the reason why a union was able to get voted in. Gross mismanagement has allowed a union, (which I believe has no business being there) to get a foothold in this plant and it will ultimately spell Lake City's demise. The #1 reason why the workers were angry was because CEO Mark DeYoung received a healthy pay raise and bonus along with half of the salary employees (Upper Management) to go along with healthy profits while telling the wage workers that they would not be getting a raise of any kind. Pair that up with the absolute worst underbid contract in Lake City history shows why Management is completely incompetent and why they shouldn't be surprised at the direction Lake City is headed.

I have been working at Alliant Lake City Small Caliber Ammunition full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Proud to support the warfighter

    Cons

This place is poorly managed, and extremely dysfunctional. People are put into positions that they are not qualified for, partly because of the 'good ole boy' network, and partly because they cannot attract good talent because nobody wants to work there. Working conditions are poor. Sewage leaking from upstairs bathrooms to lunch room below. Many safety violations that do not get taken care of in a timely manner.
    Women are not respected hered.

    Advice to Management

Please treat your employees fairly, and listen to them. Managers are allowed to unfairly 'mark' a person as a poor worker, but there is no outlet for an employee to give their side of the story. Many times poor performance is actually a result of poor leadership and management.
Please let HR represent both management and non-management. There is no fairness here. I truly belief HR wants to treat people fairly, but they feel threatened by management. This is a hostile work environment.
