I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Anatomy at work, but often micro-managed by middle to bottom layer of management

    Cons

Too many layers of management. Defense still on down-turn meaning no room for advancement.

    Advice to Management

Look at Honeywell big lay-off in 1992 - 7 layers of management!

    Pros

Present - I have nothing to say good / Past read below.

    Cons

The company "was" a nice family orientated business; everyone was happy, highly qualified, motivated and friendly until they sent in a corporate head hunter. Now, most have left after several (+20) key personnel were asked leave due to a RIF.
    Very sad, miss my friends.

    Advice to Management

ATK was pro-veteran until they did this, now, all vets need to be cautious because ATK does not care if your a vet. They did not care about the people working in a small business (less than 200) they purged. There was no offer to work elsewhere.

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

9-80 work schedule that will soon go away.

    Cons

This is a very out dated company with no potential for growth and only the old folks seem to have a chance and some of them were escorted out after 30 years service. Layoffs are numerous and more to come due to the merger with orbital. Had hoped that Orbital would bring something good to the company but even though there was a merger, there are 2 companies and opportunity to cross over to the better half (orbital) don't seem to exist. Growth potential is almost impossible in some groups even though they say they promote internal growth. It's a "good ol boy" club with a bunch of fat cats. If you want a job and wiling to take a risk of being laid off or don't care to advance, this is the place for you. Moral is lower here than any place I've ever worked. Raises are low along with pay unless you part of the good ol boy club. Medical benefits will cost you almost 600/month. I could go on but just thinking about the time I wasted at this company depresses me. As someone told me after 3 months of work there, "you should've run the other way", would be my advice to anyone consider working here. If your an intern, look for another place to do an internship.
Engineering wise, this company is a depressing hole but a great place for the C- students and someone with the desire to do the absolute minimum. Pride is an illusion here and depression and low moral are real.

    Advice to Management

Quit taking care of yourself and take care of your employees. This company is a reflection of the pathetic leadership and should reach a 2 start overall rating by year end. There's a reason that SpaceX is winning the space race and ATK is losing. If it wasn't for the NASA breast, this company would have washed up some time ago. Start operating in the 21st century and get rid of the 70's mentality. Start being part of the solution instead of the problem but as long as your getting your fat check, wasting the government money and have no concern about your employees, you will continue to be losers in the aerospace industry. But as long as you got some fat Trident missiles to produce, the mfg side will have a job.

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Finally got a raise after 4yrs. Only took some gutless people to back out of a momentum shifting strike to accomplish this.

    Cons

Power-less union, no employee rights, CONSTANT threat of lay off, profits over personnel, very unethical, raising insurance cost EVERY YEAR, etc.

    Advice to Management

Stick up for the people that make this company a billion dollar corporation for a change. You would be surprised how that would help moral.

    Pros

    Good benefits, work life balance

    Cons

Do not value employees at all

    Advice to Management

Do not hire new employees knowing that they will be laid off due to a company merger. They may have left a good job for that role. Be honest.

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Legacy employees, at JPL and NASA sites around the world, put out tremendous effort to keep NASA, ESA and other agencies in touch with spacecraft. No alternative communication possible in so many cases.
Long-term employees are an inspiration, and so willing to teach (and learn) from newer people.

    Cons

So much work, done by so many, for so few rewards or recognition. ATK misuses this hard-won NASA contract, and the mid-level employees dedication and expertise, giving back nothing. ATK needs the prestige of contracting with NASA, but is OK burning out people, and importing inexperienced management from unrelated business sectors.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within, abandon current performance review system and policies. Avoid favoritism and other HR blunders. Reward hard work, expertise and experience rather than current practices.
Hopefully things have improved over the last year.

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

No pros for ATK overall. Some people like 9/80 schedule. Since most of us are waiting to be laid off, it is easy to do other errands during day.

    Cons

There are 2 categories of employees here. Those that have been at ATK for around 30 years, and the others with less than 10 and almost nobody between the two. Just a year ago, ATK had a number of younger motivated engineers that were great contributors. Corrupt managers laid them all off and kept dinosaurs because it is ole boys club in its ugliest form. The only thing that matters at ATK is number of years you spent there. You can be totally useless, they will still keep you because they just know your family. ATK is make up numbers type of company. They lie to customers.
ATK did not design a new products for least 3 decades. They have been running only sustainment type of projects. If you stay at ATK for long time, your skills will deteriorate, and you will be incapable of working anywhere else. Same with managers. Managers and dinosaurs engineers are like one entity. The only thing they know is micromanagement on steroids in order to steal someone's else ideas or design. ATK in Clearwater is pathetically controlling environment where employees have no freedom and control. Even for small tasks here, it takes too long with too many people involved. HR is non existent except when they lay someone off. Employees that are still there are extremely unmotivated and teritorial. Everyone is waiting to collect severance.

    Advice to Management

Fire 90% of the upper and mid level managers in Clearwater. Stop protecting your friends despite the fact that you knew them for decades; most of them do not contribute at all.

    Pros

In order for a company to grow the management must lead by example in caring and love.

    Cons

It is wrong for a company to control your vacation time to their advanage

    Advice to Management

You should always put others before yourself especially in emergencies.
