    Pros

    Big-company security.
    Fascinating products.
    Honorable co-workers.
Isolated location, nice for lunch-time walks.

    Cons

    Big-company insecurity.
    Top-heavy, aloof management.
    Typical government contractor.
    No employee empowerment.
    No active designs.

    Advice to Management

I come from a small-business background, where active designs ensure a companies ongoing success. ATK would not pursue any research or design unless they had a government contract for it; promising projects were killed when this policy was implemented. Consequently, ATK had no native technology to bring to the table. All of the competent engineers in my section left during my six month contract or shortly thereafter.

I admire the patience of any engineer that can work under ATK management for years on end. I expect that the same is true for other aerospace companies.

BTW: ATK was acquired by Orbital. I don't know whether Orbital has restored some of the needed development projects or whether they are still strictly on the government dole. The Promontory, UT facility has been in decline since Thiokol was first sold to Morton.

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the people I worked with in my particular department were great people. A few of the managers in my particular department were great leaders and knew how to coach and develop their team in a very positive and effective manner.

    Cons

When they were at the end of their contract and was time to renew the contract with the government, they made a very low cost proposal to win the bid. And in doing so, they got rid of a lot of their best employees to save cost so they could keep the low cost "promise" they made to the government. In doing so, they sacrificed a lot of quality and ended up with a lot of overworked employees that are currently underpaid and under appreciated.

    Advice to Management

Stop making promises you can't keep. Take care of your employees and they will be loyal and take care of you.

    Pros

Good pay. Average benefits. Can work on projects that are unique and highly technical

    Cons

Disorganized management. Low moral. Company waste a lot of the government's money. Too fast of a pace to e the job one right. End up doing things two or three times because of poor organization.

    Advice to Management

    Start making good sound decisions.

I worked at Alliant Techsystems full-time

    Pros

Had great technology in many varied product areas.

    Cons

The company did not know where it was going, with some major markets drying up. For several years there was no overarching strategy.

    Pros

Most of the people were nice and okay to work with. Pay was good. The work wasn't hard. Management was pretty good to get along with.

    Cons

Buildings were very old and dirty. No air. Bounced you around from job to job and shift to shift and building to building.

    Advice to Management

Do better job of not bouncing and jerking employees around from place to place and job to job. It makes it hard for people that have to have set shifts and schedules and times that have families.

  7. "Upper Management needs fixing"

    Pros

A 9/80 work week. Loved having every other Friday off. People were extremely nice. Felt like family. Didn't mind going into work everyday.

    Cons

Upper management didn't support local engineering to pursue new work. Upper management out for the good of themselves and not the rest of the ATK community.

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of work to be done on a too small staffing level so you get exposure to a lot of things you might not otherwise. I like my immediate boss. Decent pay.

    Cons

Laysoffs, managing crisis to crisis. Post merger growing pains. Huge expectations and constant change in direction. Weak systems. Not an enjoyable atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Settle on one direction and quit making the people who try hard feel like they are the problem. Create a less caustic work environment.

I have been working at Alliant Techsystems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great product. Mostly good people working within the confines they have. Many of the brightest employees who received training in the field or from somewhere else, not ATK. Good 401K match.

    Cons

Poor medical/dental benefits but most employees don't realize because have been there as part of the good old boy network for so long. Surprised at the many husband/wife teams with 20+ years of employment. Too many major management changes to name. Employees joked about how many layoffs they had survived.

    Advice to Management

Bring in outside consultant not to manage the lower levels of efficiency, but to manage the upper levels of efficiency and to coach managers on HOW TO MANAGE! Follow up on engagement feedback received from employees a few years ago. Take it again. MANAGE!

    Pros

Paychecks are on time and most work areas are climate controlled.

    Cons

The company has seen 4 lay off's in the past year. They don't offer any formal training so if you don't come into the job and are able to pick it up immediately they will most likely get rid of you. They are only concerned with how cheap they can run the operation and the upper management is out of touch with how the processes actually work.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your people and they will drive your business.
