I worked at Alnylam full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good location, good people and culture, generous benefits, fun events, food and beer provided for employees. Lots of growth with hiring and acquiring new space and factories.

    Cons

Managements' faith and haste to grow allows the company to aim high but reality hit as one of the company's drugs were halted and that effected the stock and the future of the companies' stability. Pharma stocks have a high variance and Alnylam is not immune from that. Life/Work balance was an issue for some teams. Also, while new building is sleek, the cubicle structure is open floor and that is not for everybody.

    Advice to Management

Keep employees informed as biotech can be a volatile industry, and make sure that life/work balanced is maintained.

    Pros

Fast pace company, good salaries and benefits. Work hard play hard. Nice work environment. Location in Kendall Square offers a lot stuff to do for lunch or after work. Good transportation options.

    Cons

A lot of new people that are changing the old culture. There are pro's and cons to this. Company is growing in leaps and bounds. No longer in one building so there is a separation factor between groups.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget where you came from. Growing is great, but don't let it change what made you great. The main leaders are smart and need to stay connected to the rank and file

I worked at Alnylam full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

really great science, a lot of good people working there and despite some typical for the industry stumbles they have built quite an impressive track record. Some of the micro-cultures are really great

    Cons

the place is pretty vertically organized for a company of that size, like all public companies there is a high degree of confidentiality around some issues and some of the micro-cultures are really cut throat

    Advice to Management

The bell curve for merit increases can do more harm that good a hyper competitive environment is not helpful or innovation or morale.

"Dynamic fast-paced environment, aggressively prosecuting a novel therapeutic technology"

    Pros

Strong scientific rigor, very dynamic environment, compelling new technology, good fiscal management, heavily matrixed organization that demands good team play and collaboration

    Cons

ALNY is aggressively seeking clinical POC for the RNAi therapeutic platform. The intense race toward clinical results often means that research around better understanding the fundamentals of the technology are deprioritized. Target selection also feels rushed and premature at times.

    Advice to Management

Don't overlook mechanistic research around targets and delivery systems as this provides a strong foundation for problem solving later in clinical development.

I have been working at Alnylam full-time

    Pros

Good inspiring management, great products and technology, fun and incredibly smart people

    Cons

Too much to do, too few people to do it. Transitioning from a startup/research driven company into a commercially driven company is starting to shake things up and is going to make things tough for the next couple years.

    Advice to Management

Hire more people or slow down. The rush to pump up the pipeline is creating risk for the leading products and ultimately for the patients that could benefit from the technologies.
