I worked at Alpha Natural Resources full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good work environment, I enjoyed working with my coworkers. I enjoyed the challenges the job presented, especially troubleshooting electrical equipment.

    Cons

The coal industry is very depressed and job security is uncertain. The coal industry is forecasted to remain depressed for several years.

    Advice to Management

The coal industry is facing difficult market conditions for the next several years. Four of the five largest suppliers have filed bankruptcy. Promote a positive work environment to reduce the stress from what employees are seeing (a lack of job security in the industry).

I worked at Alpha Natural Resources full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great Pay, fantastic benefits, knowledgeable co-workers. All the overtime you want with no limits. very structured system. Was part of a collective bargaining unit (UMWA)

    Cons

Very little to no time off at the start of employment. about two days for a entire year. Very strict rules for attendance, coming in late or leaving early is not tolerated. You will work 6 days a week a lot.

    Advice to Management

Management is too full of themselves and need to relax and not take things too seriously. The average employee has years of experience and is more than capable of doing most tasks assigned to them without constantly being babysit.

I have been working at Alpha Natural Resources full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very people oriented. You feel like you have a choice as an individual. You do not feel like a number. The Running Right program is a great safety and work program.

    Cons

We are currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Also, the coal industry is almost dead. This is not a very stable industry at the moment.

    Advice to Management

Hang in there. You're doing the right things; the cards are just stacked against you. Stay vigilant and keep your heads held high

I worked at Alpha Natural Resources (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay was excellent, equipment was kept up well for the most part, they tried to maintain a set schedule so you did not work 6-7 days every week

    Cons

The industry as a whole is fighting a fading market, that said layoffs started coming from every corner of the state.. I had health issues in 2013 and chose to bow out gracefully.. but honestly my experience with Alpha was good no cons to list

The vacation policy could be better. During down times for coal, cuts must be made in benefits.

    Advice to Management

Be more open to the option of working from home a couple days per week.
