Make your company more affordable to work for.

I worked at Alpha Systems (Huntingdon Valley) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Great work life balance and no micro management.
    - You are appreciated (but not rewarded) appropriately for work well done.
    - Good overall management but certain areas could use help
    - Good client relationship with existing clients

    Cons

    - Limited opportunities for career advancement
    - No pay raise and the bonus program is a joke. These are buzz words to attract potential candidates during interview and nothing more
    - Constant revolving door and high turn over for the last 5 years.
    - Business and sales did not pickup momentum and the company vision and strategy just fell flat over the years. As a result there were dynamic and significant changes, layoffs, cut backs and acquisition to the company. This reflects poorly on the executive management.
    - Unstable and volatile work environment with no job security and steady business growth
    - Company doesn't have aggressive performance goals to be profitable and fails to deliver when it comes to finding new means to bring in fresh revenue. As a result, employees ultimately get the brunt of the blow by not seeing a bonus or a raise.
    - Company portrays itself as a private sector company but fails to deliver as a result of its 'Mom and Pop' shop mentality and business practices.

    Advice to Management

    - "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" The phrase couldn't be more true when it comes to some of the upper management who has been there for years but is unwilling to change with the times. Their mom-n-pop mentality and attitudes towards business practices, sales strategies and client relationships has cost the company direly during the last few years.
    - Employees are never in the know how of the exact state of the company and the realistic 5 year goal for the company. They are always treated to a sugar coated version of where the company is and where its headed. This is always in hopes that there wont be any turn over and it would make it seem that it is a stable work environment. During the last 5 years, every year brought upon significant changes to the organization which was never brought up during any company updates. Executive management is not very forth coming so it has been a norm to expect a speech about a smooth sailing ship up till today while tomorrow would bring a typhoon and a shipwreck. If you are lucky you would get a plank to hang onto.

I have been working at Alpha Systems (Huntingdon Valley) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Good natured people, good values.

    Cons

Benefits package is next to unaffordable, salaries are kind of a joke.

    Advice to Management

Do your research. Use competitors as a basis for how you should benefit and compensate your employees.

    Pros

Flexible hours (depending on your job title), friendly co-workers, company events, alternate pizza/bagel days the last friday of every month

    Cons

Unfair promotions, unfair practices and procedures, lack of communication, unfair yearly reviews for employees, high level of nepotism, terrible benefits, unbalanced work/life schedule, and a lack of compassion

    Advice to Management

The biggest advice I can give to management would be to show more dedication and professionalism in their roles. Also to listen to (really listen, not just hear words) their employees and do what they can to help their employees learn and grow, and achieve the company's ultimate goal of customer satisfaction, being our client's favorite partner in business. There are too many that care more about their superiority and job security than the reflection of the company to our clients. Some are more concerned with delegating and pointing fingers when the main priority should be getting the job done effeciently and in the expected timely manner. I also strongly feel that an employees job tite/salary should reflect one's skill set and qualifications rather than their popularity or internal relationships with other employees (which unfortunately seems to be the way to move up the ladder in this place).

    Pros

Good work/life balance. Really trying hard to go Agile. Few meetings, quick decision making. Relaxed environment whenever management isn't around. Trying to adopt the latest software development technologies and methodologies.

    Cons

Very hierarchical management style. Senior management is not open to hearing opinions that differ from their own. Despite the agile platitudes, priorities are still changed on a whim.

    Advice to Management

Try listening to your employees, especially the experienced ones.

I worked at Alpha Systems (Huntingdon Valley) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The teammates are the best part. MOST of the staff actually care about doing a good job. Agile processes work well here.

    Cons

Company sells itself as ready for change, but the same old dogs drive the mediocrity. The building is like a dungeon with almost no sunlight.

    Advice to Management

Recognize the need for change and actually support the people you hire to make that change.

    Pros

Really wonderful friendships gained working here. A lot of intelligent people with great ideas. Based on the team members you were working with there could be great team collaboration. Select group of people that would do anything to assist you in accomplishing your task.

    Cons

Listen to the intelligent people with great ideas. People are put into positions they don't deserve or haven't worked for. If you haven't had experience doing what a department does you really have no business managing that department. There aren't enough females in managerial positions. No bonuses even though they were part of the hiring letter. There is absolutely no growth here and a dyeing software application.

    Advice to Management

Hire people that have worked in the industry before. Don't just hire people because they are your friends, it makes the organization seem weak and it makes management look bad. If you are going to reward certain people for their life events (marriage, children, etc.) reward everyone else when they are supposed to get their bonuses and they have done a good job all year round. People rely on bonuses for their livelihood so they can actually get married and have kids.

I have been working at Alpha Systems (Huntingdon Valley) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great location, team is very tight knit and works really well together. Very flexible when need be.

    Cons

Insurance seems to go up every year, but which company out there is getting cheaper? Raises are at the low end of the market.

I worked at Alpha Systems (Huntingdon Valley) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The people that I worked with were great. I made some lifelong friends at Alpha.

    Cons

Management, tends to rule with an iron thumb. Do it this way, because I want it done this way, whether it's correct or not. I have seen people being taken into an office and screamed at. They don't always value loyalty.

    Advice to Management

Hold on to the people who have put their blood sweat and tears into the company, and made the company better, and brought money to the company. Don't just hire people because you think throwing money at a problem, and new faces will solve it.
