I have been working at Alstom Transportation full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Alstom, Hornell at least, pays well to work in the middle of nowhere.

    Cons

Departments clash and blame each other for mistakes. "Teams" are everything, yet they all don't work well.

I have been working at Alstom Transportation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Alstom is a global player in passenger rail and signaling -- headquartered in Paris, France -- the North American region is a hotbed for growth, including high speed rail, which provides for good challenging work to be a part of the team making that happen.

    Cons

Like any large, global company, Alstom struggles to balance central authority with regional autonomy, and senior management is somewhat disconnected from business operations.

    Advice to Management

    Connect.

I worked at Alstom Transportation full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Safe, clean, decent pay, and many people stay for the long haul.

    Cons

You feel like you could get fired at the drop of a hat. The less motivated to advance you are, the better you fit in.

    Advice to Management

Don't treat the workers like idiots and they won't act like idiots.

I have been working at Alstom Transportation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

There is so many opportunities with this company if you are looking to learn about public transport.

    Cons

Very old style of management; screaming and shouting is the only process that seems to work Does not care about employee well being because there is nothing to in the area. Very dirty tactics because managers will use a new person to blame problems on.

    Advice to Management

Offer full time opportunity meaning a full time contract like you have it in france because everyone seems to lose their job as soon as they get old.

I worked at Alstom Transportation for more than a year

    Pros

Good hard working people. Most people there are salt of the earth locals whose families have been in the railroad industry for generations. Company has great benefits, and salaries are "decent" for that economically depressed area of NY State.

    Cons

There is NO training for new employees in Engineering. No development. Produce immediately or be fired. During my time at the Hornell facility I watched as MANY good people were fired at the drop of a hat. It seemed like all you had to do was sneeze out loud to get fired! (I was not fired, by the way. I left on good terms... these are just my observations) Many are in management because they have been at the Hornell facility...

    Advice to Management

Train yourselves and middle management on how to manage people and resources. Get rid of the dead weight in middle management. Develop your people, train your people... dont just fire them after 4 weeks because they are not producing to the level of someone who has been there for several years.

I have been working at Alstom Transportation for less than a year

      Pros

Laid back environment, great benefits, and there is always room for upward mobility.

      Cons

The training was little to nonexistent, more of a keep trying until you get it right training method.

I worked at Alstom Transportation full-time for less than a year

      Pros

      willing to hire the handiecapp; { double amputee}

      Cons

the minute they have a problem they will fire them when they do have Dr's excuse's & call in when ever they miss a day because of a medical issuse. The union for them belongs to the company not the people so don't look to them for help

      Advice to Management

find out what an amputee is. I'm sure it means lost of a leg or arm.
