    I worked at AltaGas full-time

    Pros

Very few. Technical leadership and capability is non-existant. Save for a couple diamonds in the rough, vast majority of IT staff are either woefully under-qualified or completely checked out and dont care.

    Cons

NO clear high level direction from Team leads and management level in IT. What direction that comes is fragmented and often contradictory.
Daily Meeting hell. IT at Altagas' solution to ineffective meetings is to have more meetings.
Unable to retain top talent - those that stay are, as previously mentioned, checked out or woefully under-qualified to be in their roles.
Every project, regardless of attempts to plan properly, ends up as a crash project as it nears deadline where any planning goes out the window and things are hacked together.

    Advice to Management

None. Short of getting rid of 90%+ of IT staff and starting over, which is completely unrealistic, nothing can be done to resolve the issues within the IT group. Too many key people making poor decisions on a regular basis.
I suspect that management will eventually get fed up with IT's inability to deliver on a regular basis and attempt to solve the problems with the panacea of outsourcing which will in turn be as bad or worse.

I have been working at AltaGas full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

New graduate program gives you exposure to different areas in the company. Health benefits are okay, promised bonus structure was attractive, although the company has not followed through over the past year.

    Cons

Managers consistently treat new grads like they're admin assistants. You role up to HR, and they have no idea what you're actually doing. Bonuses are grouped together with the other analysts in your year. No mechanism for feedback or evaluation. Job prospects coming out of the program are grim. New grad role is perfect for someone looking to be a glorified summer student. Despite what you're told, you have no say in deciding your future role, essentially a detached HR admin places you wherever they feel is best. If you're pursuing a cpa good luck accumulating usable hours. Many employees are waiting for commodities to pickup so they can leave.

    Advice to Management

Allow managers to have a direct impact on bonus structure/yearly reviews. Listen to feedback from current and previous new grads to improve the program.

    Pros

good coworkers, Corporate Days off just before a long weekend, acceptable benefits

    Cons

pay well below industry standards, pay lip service only to employees, company couldn't care less in reality what employees want and think, management totally out of touch with workplace and workforce, great for people starting out in their career but no career development - you have to go elsewhere for opportunities, horrible managers that have no business managing

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and walk the talk. You say one thing but your actions convey an entirely different thing.

I have been working at AltaGas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

this used to be a great place to work, sadly its fallen victim to its own success. At one time they hired only the best and brightest.
Work-life balance used to be stellar, now 60+ hour weeks are the norm.

    Cons

A lot of the "new wave" of management hires have been people who can talk a lot, but can't achieve anything
The company has stopped promoting from within. It is routine now to pass over more than qualified people in favour of outsiders - the "grass is greener" symptom.

    Advice to Management

Seriously consider firing half of the VP and Director level employees, they are the ones creating the wave of attrition in the organization.

    Pros

Some pockets of the organization have a learning, development and employee-oriented culture. There are many wonderful people who work at this organization. This company has the potential to be great. The share price does very well.

    Cons

The tone from the top is that the bottom line takes precedence over employee growth. There is very weak communication and executive level presence in this organization on a day-to-day basis. It's unfortunate how many people are under utilized while senior management keeps hiring VPs from external sources.

    Advice to Management

Create a culture of employee growth. You'd be surprised how well the employees take care of the bottom line then.

    Pros

Overall good company - unless your a technical planner

    Cons

Lower pay, not much room to grow.

    Advice to Management

They hire and fire in this position cyclically, for no reason.

    Pros

Great people at the line and managerial level. Good projects and BD makes for lots of opportunities.

    Cons

When former CEO (Cornhill) stepped back the company lost focus on its core values. Lip service is paid to anything beyond the "deck-plate". Cornhill had a vision and created a great company. Look at the stock price since the leadership changes so see how much has been lost.

I worked at AltaGas full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of responsibility and experience with little to no oversight gives you great marketability in future jobs as long as you don't make an error due to lack of guidance
Great networking opportunities working with clients and vendors for future jobs
All the upper management and HR just likes partying all of the time so it can be a fun place to work since they decide all of the company days off and company events and set the tone... not sure how it stays profitable though at the rate of unproductiveness

    Cons

Aim at paying below market average
Company is controlled by HR, who doesn't care or understand anything about operations, which is what generates income
Great people work there but don't stay long due to backwards management and inefficiency

    Advice to Management

Zip up your pants and set an example
Take away any decision making power from HR - they are meant to be a support role, their ineptitude at making sustainable operational and business decisions will eventually come back and bite you
