    Pros

It is a decent stepping-stone to getting a real job.

    Cons

Software is micromanaged. You won't be able to show any personal initiative to do anything that your manager hasn't approved for you to work on.

In the morning your mailbox will be flooded with dumb questions from the offshore people that you are required to train. After that you will be forced to fill out bug reports. By the time you are done with all the paperwork, you'll be too tired or have too little time to do any real work.

The CEO is good buddies with TJ Rodgers, so expect to see layoffs and offshoring. But don't worry, John D will have a big pay raise and bonus ready for himself at the end of each year.

    Advice to Management

    Treat employees with respect.

    Pros

good work life balance, good benefits, fairly good pay. The company has some great products that are being used in a variety of industries.

    Cons

Terrible management, poor communicators and very selfish, they dont care about engineering. Very tight with money = old tools, pcs, no travel or external training etc.

    Advice to Management

Invest some money into your staff. Grease the wheel that makes the company run, and you just might find productivity and product quality will increase.

    Pros

    - coworkers are great and extremely intelligent, professional & helpful
    - products are spectacular & technology is amazing
    - fiscally conservative

    Cons

    - unsustainable work/life expectations
    - ruthless performance management
    - huge push to make "assembly-line" jobs so that they can be pushed overseas. Employees disciplined for thinking out of the box or trying something new.
    - absolutely no room for failure. Punished for mistakes even if you learn from them
    - all decisions are made based on wall street expectations. The needs/development of the employee don't make the list of priorities.
    - treats customers the same way it treats employees. Fortunately for Altera, neither employees nor customers have many options if they want to play with FPGAs.

    Advice to Management

Altera is killing its people. The current performance of the company was generated through the efforts of people 18-36 months ago - not the people who are being driven into the ground today. Put away "the whips". Realize that even the poorest performers at Altera rank highly in the overall workforce. Capitalize on that while you can.

    Pros

Great place to learn about programmable logic and system design.
Salary is industrial standard. Good people to work with and share thoughts.

    Cons

It is not "WHAT" you know, but "WHO" you know to get a good performance review or pay raise.
Manager will take credit for your hard work without proper reward so that they can get promoted and stock options. The work environment is very political.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people like human, not machine.

    Pros

High-quality colleagues, in terms of intelligence & skill.
    Adequate tools & facilities.
Fantastic base of experience in staff (many who've been there for 15+ years).
    Always execution-focused.

    Cons

Management pigeonholes employees, and rarely lets them grow their scope of responsibilities, or even demonstrate talent that may stretch beyond their nominal job descriptions.

Management actively discourages interaction between functional departments (engineering & sales, for example).

Little-to-no opportunity to try new things, unless deemed "absolutely necessary" to the deployment of the next evolutionary product.

    No risk-taking.

    Advice to Management

Expand your perspective. Try new things. Hire people from more varied backgrounds. Recruit back alumni who've broadened their experience elsewhere.

    Pros

    Attractive campus
    Associated with a solid foundry
    Tools are better than competitors
There are a gym and cafeteria on campus

    Cons

    Long hours
    No recognition
    Too conservative
    Too political
    Back stabbing by co-workers
    No interdepartmental sharing of information
Management has put itself on pedestal and rewarded themselves handsomely while ignoring and demotivating the 70% of the working population that doesn't score Outstanding or Exceeds on their performance review - it's not what you know or how well you do it, it's who you know and shameless self promotion and how good you can make yourself look - even at other peoples expense.
Worst political environment I have ever been involved with.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of performing at Altera or subject yourselves to the same harsh standards of evaluation.
Senior management to have meaningful interactions with staff below them - not the token 10:1 or skip-level( which have recently disappeared) meetings that are a waste of everyone's time.

I worked at Altera full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Interesting products and technology niche

    Cons

Ranking system, systemic political culture with gross favoritism and micromanagement, ageism, most employees have little participation in benefits or company growth, culture is pushing toward more risk with repercussions of failures becoming hot potatoes in the wild political and subjective ranking culture, generally poor management

    Advice to Management

Resign - the current management has gradually dragged the company down. This has become a finance and HR driven company, the CEO has said repeatedly that it's all about shareholders 1st 2nd and 3rd (i.e. not employees or customers). And that narrow philosophy is not serving the shareholders. Stop turning out good people just because their career growth is limited by internal politics and slow growth in San Jose.

You might get some good technical experience. Compensation is average.

    Cons

Poor management: very old school, lots of politics, micromanagement, anti-motivational methods, favoritism.
Working from home is discouraged (crunch time or not). No work-life balance.
    Many unstated rules, inconsistent policies.

    Advice to Management

Be fair and clear on policies.
Be consistent. Treat everyone equally and with respect.

I worked at Altera full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

I am not sure if there are any now. Started of long time ago and used to enjoy the place.

    Cons

Senior management made poor decisions 4-5 years ago and have since hiding their missteps thru constant reorgs and layoffs. No accountability of decisions made by executive management. Used to be solid number two FPGA company and is on the verge of becoming a me too FPGA provide along with Microsemi and quick logic.

Too many "yes sirs" with little to no technical insight among middle managers.

    Advice to Management

Invest in engineering and product creation.
