I worked at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Car, smokes, big name company

    Cons

Let's not beat around the bush: you drive around all day calling on gas station clerks acting like what you do is important or challenging. It's not. 95% of your customers are Paki and the company is 95% white. The product you're peddling is tobacco and essentially sells itself. It's a stupid for a greedy, rich company.

    Advice to Management

    Be more professional.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Insurance is not good, but all other benefits are great. 3 weeks vacation, company car, flex work schedule.

    Cons

You see about 120 stores every 4 weeks. Always making space for new product, signs and trying to convince managers to order additional inventory. Duties, demands, and stress highly depends on your geography and local management. Smaller territories (geographically) make a great work-life balance. Demands and requirements from local management and HQ are sometimes unrealistic, given time and technogy restraints. It is very rare for anything to run smoothly.
Every manager is different and life can be great with the right one.
Training is sparse, often process is pushed more than actual results.
Lay offs every few years spreads out workload for everyone.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting people that aren't natural leaders. Do NOT allow just anyone to get promoted just because they had the time to jump through a bunch of hoops. Make geographies and territories that make sense and are fair. Hire extras to cover vacant areas.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good pay, benefits. Great promotional track if you are gay, a woman, or are not white. It's not real sales so you are not held accountable for anything (until your UM gets in trouble).

    Cons

They promote based off of skin color, gender, and sexual orientation before they look at performance. Culture is just talk....no action (so is work life balance).

    Advice to Management

Take a look at your mid-level kids. These managers will single handedly drive down shareholder value. It's happening now. There is also a huge gap from HQ to the field. If you put effective leaders in charge you will see share growth.

    I worked at Altria full-time

    Pros

Great and smart people, with good benefits

    Cons

Business is in decline so resources and budgets get more constrained every year, and there are layoffs every few years.

    Advice to Management

Get out an talk to employees more.

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Alot of good people to work with. Feel good culture. Job is challenging and can be a fun way to earn a living. Great benefits.

    Cons

If a Manager is out to get you, hang on and enjoy the ride because everyone from all levels will join the parade. The lack of integrity, trust and support will astound you at that point. It will get to the point of discrimination but they will cover for each other, so watch out.

    Advice to Management

Watch your Managers and put a stop to it when you see people being singled out and treated extremely unfairly, inches away from an EEOC discrimination complaint. Its not the rightto treat people unfairly and unjustly because a Manager has it in for somebody.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

All expense paid company car, company profit sharing, good starting base salary, great stock, very generous perks at company meetings ( open bar, live music , fine food, massages, games, dancing etc)

    Cons

Terrible front line Managers. No real supervision over some truly disturbing, power abusing, degrading, demoralizing, first real job Unit Managers. Emotional intelligence runs low at Altria and analytical intelligence runs high. Extremely insulated environment, tons of gossip and backstabbing. MUST be professional brown noser to be successful I witnessed the best butt kissing in my life at Altria all the while these same employees will pretend to work, falsify calls, and never be confronted. This is common knowledge at Altria. Their "culture" ( cant beat the experience) is basically a ploy to attract human capital straight out of their favorite universities and ignore that they are just a old school, politics as usual, dinosaur company, making a product that kills people.

    Advice to Management

Stop turning a blind eye to how some of your Unit Managers are treating your hard working TSM's. You have been told countless times and do nothing. One of these days, someone will break your policy and videotape in their vehicle the atrocities that happen on a work with day. Managers screaming obscenities, pounding their fists, verbally abusing your TSM's. Then send it out for the world to see. You don't need anymore bad press. Really, what would the shareholders think.

    Pros

Good starting pay, company car, great 401K match

    Cons

Dying tobacco industry has lead to sales force depletion. If you do not fit in, you will be targeted and let go.

    Pros

    Great colleagues, fun meetings...that's it

    Cons

Higher ups don't follow HR protocol, don't value employees outside HQ

    Advice to Management

Get a grip on HR practices out in the field

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You can coordinate your own time as long as you keep your quota.

    Cons

The staff needs more review specially of the higher managers. They believe the words of the District Manager over the Territory sales manager. In my experience out of 5 TSM in a region, our manager and District Manager fired 3 people in less than a year. That is more than 85% of the people they were looking over. The company eventually catch up to them and put them on probabtion but this needs to be look at before hand. I also sent a compain to HR and instead they left me for two weeks until the last product was sold and then let me go. The process for conditional contract wasnt followed. The rules on driving got more strict, making you responsible for a car accident even if you werent at fault leaving only 3 faults to loose the job. Is a job that requires driving and people in some areas are incapable fo driving. During my work with the company i only damage the car 1 time and the rest of times was the others fault with a total of 7 times

    Advice to Management

Listen to your TSM a bit more. If the numbers are showing results dont bother them, the job is being done.. dont tell them in one review they follow everything by the book and need to be more out of the box and next review say the dont follow by the book and is not complying it is very confusing.

    I worked at Altria full-time

    Pros

Company Car- Good compendation package, nice travel, reimburse for home office, generous company lunches dinners and events.

    Cons

Company turns a blind eye to how front line management will belittle and verbally abuse TSM's. Culture of fear keeps people in their place. Culture built on brown nosing and gossip. Not a real sales job, more of an account management position. Fortune 200 company and technology is outdated. Very insulated, most people have never worked any other place than Altria(Pensions) or they hire mostly fresh out of college - this gives them the ability to control through covert forms of intimidation. Who likes you determines your career path at Altria, and thats it.

    Advice to Management

Can't beat the experience - Company Values- Stop talking the talk and start walking the walk.
