I worked at Altria full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good pay, good experience, good benefits. There are plenty of opportunities for lateral moves to gain a lot of experience.

    Cons

Lack of growth potential for employees as business model requires fewer employees year after year. Company culture is moving aggressively left wing and white males should look for careers with other companies. The diversity push at Altria is gender and race based.

    Advice to Management

You sell Republican brands to Republicans, maybe don't chase the Republican employees out. Your company culture is inclusive as long as an employee is a leftist. Anyone right of Mao will feel unwelcome.

I have been working at Altria full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    401k plan
    Great, smart people
    Amenities
    Emphasis on Diversity and Inclusion
    Half day Fridays, jeans

    Cons

Healthcare benefits were at one time, top-notch but have been consistently reduced each year
Reduced headcount which means less development, longer time spent in position, and ultimately fewer promotions.
Advancement opportunities are based on who you know rather than performance
    Layoff programs every 3-4 years
Everyone is overworked - reduced headcount has resulted in people given unreasonable workloads.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your people and realize that they are drowning in their work. Look at organizations holistically when opportunities arise rather than giving them to the same people.

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good people for the most part.
    Great training
Sorta good pay depending on the job.
Like most people say promotions seem to be random. Some clueless people hold quite high positions, some brilliant people get overlooked for some reason.

    Cons

Facilities are awful, buildings from the 50s, 60s and maybe 70s. If you have allergies this place is terrible to work at.
IT is put in buildings that could be best described as a dump, IT is treated as 2nd or 3rd class corporate citizens from management.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the new direction from Senior management.

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Pay
    Healthcare
    401k
If you have a decent manager. The work life balance is moderate. Certain grade

    Cons

You're only promoted if you know someone . I received racist comments my first week there from an another employee. I spoke with the manager about it and it was brushed off so that I won't "receive negative attention"
If you don't mind an environment that judges you vs your skills, it's not so bad

    Advice to Management

Be more open minded, more innovative, accept change and implement new technology.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Fairly good benefits and breaks.

    Cons

Everything revolves around shareholder dividend checks. They will close plants and relocate, not because plant isn't profitable but to give bigger dividend check. So employees mean nothing.

    Advice to Management

    Care about workers more.

    I worked at Altria full-time

    Pros

Great benefits: company car, yearly raise, 401k match up to 3% with a 10% DPS and fully vested after day one, good health insurance, 3 weeks vacation starting out.

    Cons

Poor management and company organization. Altria isn’t keeping up with the times and the culture of the company worsens every year. They are on a pendulum; one year they are focused on the business and then the next the org. They cannot focus on both at the same time. Managing four operating companies is too much work because the companies do not communicate with each other. You will do something one month and then dismantle it the next.

    Advice to Management

Stop being so afraid of change.

I worked at Altria (Less than a year)

    Pros

The pay is very nice, with profit sharing, signing bonuses, and possibilities for yearly commission bonuses based on performance. They have great transparency with upper level management and room for promotion early on

    Cons

You have to go into gas stations and promote sales strategies to retail owners. They care more about your development plan online compared to your progress you make in person. They have a very linear way of sales strategies that they want you to follow. It's very hard to take off an entire week because you have to hit a certain amount of calls in a small window. Also there have been numerous layoffs and the tobacco industry is in decline

I worked at Altria full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great for a young graduate who wants to move into management. Good salary, excellent benefits, great annual bonuses, and incentives.

    Cons

Even with the negativity of tobacco this company has managed to make a profit and grow. Everyone or mostly everyone wants to be in management so they all try to out do everyone even if it means a little back stabbing. It's a push push to get the retailers to order all the products whether they sell or not. The territory sales reps are under constant review from their managers and there is always room for improvement. If you like that environment and want to rise to the top this is the place for you. Stick it out for 20 to 30 years and you will have it made.
I always compared it to working for a cult, but they were good to me when I had to retire early due to a disability.

    Advice to Management

Hard to give advice to a company that constantly makes a profit and takes care of its employees and stockholders. Even just about everyone hate them for what they sell they always manage to stay on top.
