    Pros

The autonomy, the benefits, the fact that it's technically a sales job but there is no commission (but there is an annual bonus that is basically guaranteed).

    Cons

The bureaucracy within sales, HQ, legal, finance and how they all work together is a mess. It's a highly regulated industry so there are many limitations. Who your management team determines basically everything. There are a lot of politics at play so you either need to play the game or you're one of the rebels. There is a lot of 'flavor of the day' fire drills. Things that people are obsessing over today may be irrelevant tomorrow.

    Advice to Management

Too much to fit in this little box.

I have been working at Altria (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Altria overall stated policy and vales are very fair. In practice, the company tries very hard to ensure that it lives by these stated values.

    Cons

Similar to organizations of similar size and complexity, you sometime need to know someone in order for your career to advance.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing at this time

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Flexible Schedule, summer hours, great insurance, over the top benefits. The salary is great for the work you do.

    Cons

They promote managers too quickly that do not know how to manage other people. Work life balance is non existent if you want to get a promotion. Work is not rewarding or challenging.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to manage and encourage your team. Micromanaging doesn't work.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Richmond Virginia is a great place to work and company pays well above regional averages.

    Cons

Cycle of layoffs every three to four years has damaged the culture of the company. Leadership out of touch with employees. Company has been struggling with innovation.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay, benefits, beautiful facilities, too many perks to mention. Generous budgets for just about everything.

    Cons

Decisions made at glacial speed, old school, conservative management, hard to impact decision making through may layers of approval and management. Managers are often not trained to manage people, good old boy network, endless hours wasted in meetings chasing decisions that may never get made. Declining business, downsizing will probably continue..

    Advice to Management

    Streamline. Train people managers.

I have been working at Altria (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Great Benefits (health, vacation, expenses, education reimbursement)
-Solid Pay with annual increases and bonuses at the manager level and above
-Fantastic Coworkers who are friendly people and who will become your good friends in all likelihood

    Cons

-Declining Industry--to remain profitable it means reducing costs (labor, benefits) ahead of consistent revenue declines.
-Frequently Changing Management--had a different direct manager for each year I was there. Usually a mixed bag.
-As in many big companies, the culture described and envisioned at the top is not always modeled all the way through the management levels.
-Monotonous daily responsibilities, its a mature industry with lots of history and a constant belief/understanding of the best way to do things
