I worked at Altria full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Autonomous workload/ work schedule
    Flexible summer hours
    Company vehicle + other perks
    Generous PTO/vacation policy
    Standard insurance
    Great for new graduates
    Fun, annual company events

    Cons

Glass ceiling for career growth (most workers remain TSMs)
100% travel and majority can be outside of the city you live in
Territory can consist of unprofessional retail managers and accounts that can make the role uncomfortable
Performance reviews based more on likability and tenure than actual performance
    Tobacco is a dying industry
Some would title the role as "glorified sign hanger" as the job can become mundane and routine
Tons of POS delivered to your home or apartment (2nd room highly recommended to hold all of it)

    Advice to Management

Provide more opportunity for other career paths or relocation to other areas. Listen to newcomers on their ideas and thoughts about where the industry is going and how to capture more market share.

    Pros

The autonomy, the benefits, the fact that it's technically a sales job but there is no commission (but there is an annual bonus that is basically guaranteed).

    Cons

The bureaucracy within sales, HQ, legal, finance and how they all work together is a mess. It's a highly regulated industry so there are many limitations. Who your management team determines basically everything. There are a lot of politics at play so you either need to play the game or you're one of the rebels. There is a lot of 'flavor of the day' fire drills. Things that people are obsessing over today may be irrelevant tomorrow.

    Advice to Management

Too much to fit in this little box.

  3. "Mismanagement"

    Current Contractor - Anonymous Contractor
    Current Contractor - Anonymous Contractor

I have been working at Altria as a contractor

    Pros

Great benefits, some of the best in the Richmond area
Richmond is affordable to live in and central (2 hr drive) to beaches, mountains, and big cities (Washington D.C.)
Great facility to work in. Solid cafeteria, store, and coffee bar and amazing well-lit spaces throughout the office to take a break in.
Flexibility in when you come in and leave to work so long as its during core hours (9-4)
    Hour lunch break is paid

    Cons

Contractors are treated very differently than full-time. There is no guarantee that you will get full time placement once your contract is up. Holidays aren't paid and no PTO or health benefits unless your contract agency provides them. Not allowed to participate in most work events and never actually managed or developed by a supervisor (you're assigned a supervisor but at best they just sign your time sheet every week). Few opportunities to lead or manage a project. Basically you're forced to do grunt work and sit at your desk for 8 hours for 1-2 years on the promise that you might get a coveted full-time spot.
Poor leadership and mismanagement leads to re-organizations happening on a regular basis in order to shake things up. Leads to a lot of confusion with employees switching bosses constantly.
Cut-throat work environment. Employees will snitch to your boss for any reason they can find. Some departments are downright hostile to work in especially when you feel you can't trust any of your co-workers.
It's a fight to move up in the company. Lots of competition for promotion.
Age and time with the company are usually placed ahead of actual educational/work background.

    Advice to Management

Treat your contractors a little better and make them feel like they're a part of something. Keep them engaged and you'll be rewarded with better and more positive work outlook from them. Also, shed the image and practices of 80's corporate America as its trite and a major turn-off to most younger employees who are looking to start their careers and that you claim you're trying to recruit. You can't put lipstick on a pig and a bright shiny facility doesn't mean anything to an employee if the actual workplace environment is still hostile. Having someone with a bachelors degree compete with someone with a HS diploma for the same technical position is a joke.

I have been working at Altria full-time

    Pros

Profit sharing, training opportunities and other benefits. There is also a significant focus on work-life balance and offering more flexible work options.

    Cons

    A recent employee communication states:

"Requiring a female or person of color as the lead contact with firms representing Altria's companies". (this was from the law dept. of all groups!)

This is not the first employee communication of this nature. I think openly discriminating against white males is not helpful in Altria's goal of increasing diversity and inclusion.

    Advice to Management

Re-examine how you are looking to improve diversity and inclusion. Discriminating against white males or any group is wrong and has no place in any work environment.

    Pros

Great Benefits, time flexibility, most people are easy to get along with

    Cons

They tend to put people in a higher position because of their culture and not their qualifications. Their strive to be diverse is putting people in positions they are unqualified for.

    Pros

Altria overall stated policy and vales are very fair. In practice, the company tries very hard to ensure that it lives by these stated values.

    Cons

Similar to organizations of similar size and complexity, you sometime need to know someone in order for your career to advance.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing at this time
