I worked at Altria full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Richmond Virginia is a great place to work and company pays well above regional averages.

    Cons

Cycle of layoffs every three to four years has damaged the culture of the company. Leadership out of touch with employees. Company has been struggling with innovation.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Pay, benefits, beautiful facilities, too many perks to mention. Generous budgets for just about everything.

    Cons

Decisions made at glacial speed, old school, conservative management, hard to impact decision making through may layers of approval and management. Managers are often not trained to manage people, good old boy network, endless hours wasted in meetings chasing decisions that may never get made. Declining business, downsizing will probably continue..

    Advice to Management

    Streamline. Train people managers.

I have been working at Altria (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Great Benefits (health, vacation, expenses, education reimbursement)
-Solid Pay with annual increases and bonuses at the manager level and above
-Fantastic Coworkers who are friendly people and who will become your good friends in all likelihood

    Cons

-Declining Industry--to remain profitable it means reducing costs (labor, benefits) ahead of consistent revenue declines.
-Frequently Changing Management--had a different direct manager for each year I was there. Usually a mixed bag.
-As in many big companies, the culture described and envisioned at the top is not always modeled all the way through the management levels.
-Monotonous daily responsibilities, its a mature industry with lots of history and a constant belief/understanding of the best way to do things

    Pros

Great benefits and superb training infrastructure. Great people and smart leaders from a business perspective that lead the company.

    Cons

Great company but lacks the initiative and leadership to promote diverse/minority candidates. Not 1 minority Director in the field sales force of 1800. The 2 they had no longer with the company. So, if you are a minority and want to advance to a senior level position this is not the company for you.

    Advice to Management

Stop being afraid to promote a minority to the director and above position take chances on them as you do the non minorities. Senior leaders- you speak the values but demonstrate them at your convenience.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Amazing benefits, Weekly covered lunches by managers, paid holidays (sometimes including Friday and Sunday), supportive staff and managers, decent work/life balance depending on who's your boss.

    Cons

Not much room for growth/promotions unless you enter sales manager route. Even from there, you have to be willing to relocate (usually to the middle of nowhere or HQ). They always have initiatives to be creative, innovative, etc... but that doesn't really pertain to admin. We just do as we're told.

    Advice to Management

Overall great company, but keep everyone in the loop with these initiatives.

    - Not compensated for individual performance

    Advice to Management

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great training and experience. Work life balance is encouraged. Great people to work around. Incredible benefits and company resources. 401K matching is phenomenal. Constantly updating your training and skills. Family atmosphere is promoted.

    Cons

Micro-management and hard to get promoted useless your a college intern. Managers have to validate there jobs by over analyzing small details. Still a "good ole boy" system for promotions. A lot of windshield time driving daily. Two recent downsizing in the last four years. Shrinking market

    Advice to Management

Value your tenured employees. They drive the business and train a lot of your new people.
