I have been working at Altria (Less than a year)

    Pros

Benefits are great, pay in on par or above average. Most people are friendly and willing to listen to what you have to say. Will pay 100% for MBA and you get medical the day you are hired.

    Cons

In manufacturing there is a Work life balance issue, lost of 12-14 hour days 5 days a week. Hard to get change initiated sometimes due to it being an old industry in the US.

    Cons

very little downsides, non-traditional working environment, must be able to self-assess weaknesses and strengths,

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Technical training is required. Very diverse work environment that promotes flexibility (starting programs to work from home or take time off). Great outside of work 'perks' onsite gyms and trainers, company sponsored events and great benefits.

    Cons

Old habits die hard - Many employees stay at Altria their entire career and are change adverse. Altria is behind market in their technologies and play catch up to stay in application support cycles.

    Advice to Management

There is a big push to be more hands on technically, however, there are not many opportunities as most of the programming is done by third parties. In addition, senior management has little insight to employees day to day efforts.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Great Pay and Benefits
    -Autonomy
    -Flexible schedule

There are a tremendous amount of programs and resources open to employees. Altria takes care of its employees very well. The retirement contributions are outstanding.

    Cons

There is a constant change of focus in strategy. New products, promotional changes, program changes, distribution goals- you name it. Can leave you feeling like you are spinning your wheels. Promotion generally requires willingness to relocate. Promotion candidates are also identified fairly early after joining the company and get the opportunities for advancement. Lastly, it's a large corporation and the politics reflect it. Be ready to play the game.

    Advice to Management

Continue to listen to your employees and treat them well. When identifying new managers, make sure the people skills are there too no matter how well they meet business objectives.

I worked at Altria full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Altria Sales and Distribution compensates their employees VERY fairly. There is a lot of independence in your day to day structure- you're basically left alone to plan your days as you wish.

    Cons

The problem with this job is that college educated individuals are minimally challenged. It's monotonous work and you find yourself in some run down gas stations/businesses sometimes dealing with very uneducated people. The Territory Sales Manager position is very basic, and once you learn your territory, it's quite mindless work. Their advancement track is crucial for those candidates who want a more challenging job that actually makes them feel like they went to college to do this.

    Advice to Management

Work on the advancement track. I would work on my "game plan" with one manager and be told to go a certain direction- then work with a different manager and have their advice completely contradict the prior. It felt like I was on a hamster wheel just running in circles. This is what inevitably (among other variables) led to my decision to leave.

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great employees with energetic attitudes.
Comprehensive health care with lucrative benefits package (Deferred Profit Sharing).
    Cover some expenses (cell-phone, internet).

    Cons

Spend most of your time at retail stores rather than in an office environment.
Relocation is practically required in order to move up within the company.

    Advice to Management

Continue to take time to make sales employees feel included in the strategic vision of the company in order to make us feel empowered and "part of the team."

    Pros

Great company with excellent benefits. There are opportunities for advancement and to learn different aspects of the business.

    Cons

No work-life balance. There are some long days in the manufacturing sector of the business. There was not always the team spirit.
