I worked at Altria full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great training and experience. Work life balance is encouraged. Great people to work around. Incredible benefits and company resources. 401K matching is phenomenal. Constantly updating your training and skills. Family atmosphere is promoted.

    Cons

Micro-management and hard to get promoted useless your a college intern. Managers have to validate there jobs by over analyzing small details. Still a "good ole boy" system for promotions. A lot of windshield time driving daily. Two recent downsizing in the last four years. Shrinking market

    Advice to Management

Value your tenured employees. They drive the business and train a lot of your new people.

I worked at Altria (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great company to launch a career with. The pay was very solid for someone graduating college, company vehicle for personal use and business use, company gas card for personal use and business use, 3 weeks paid vacation starting out, 14 paid holidays, best sales training one could ask for, they go all out for company meetings with bands, DJ's, food, open bar, great venues. If you are recruited from college and have to move for the job, they have a moving company pack you up, they give you half a months salary for relo, they give you a real estate agent to work with you, and pretty much handle every single expense. Lots of perks, great company to launch a career with. Medical benefits are the best, 401k is very solid, made $200k in my 401k in 7 years.

    Cons

You will work for 4 different operating companies, with each company have several different initiatives they want executed within a very short deadline. Just when you think you're done executing those initiatives, they change again, and just when you finish those, they will change again. Your life will revolve around fire drills, the rat race never ends, its easy to get burned out with this company. Politics plays a big role in getting promoted with this company. I've seen many excellent candidate get passed up and move on that should have been promoted. The work you do mostly goes unseen and people are promoted for "playing the game" rather than their effort and merit. If you have a good unit manager this job can last you several years, if you have a bad Unit Manager, and chance are you will since they have little experience, your job will be miserable. Your best bet at that point is to make that UM your friend and play the game. Perception is reality! I used to think the more responsibilities I took on, and the more initiatives I took on would lead to a promotion, however it never did. I received multiple awards, even a vision driven award, awarded to only 2 TSM's in a Section, took on mentor roles and managed interns, represented my section at corporate meetings and took on additional account management responsibilities. After 8 years of breaking my back to earn a promotion, I got burned out and quit. I found a job with a 40% increase in salary, quarterly bonuses, and $1000. a month car allowance doing half the work.

    Advice to Management

Come on Altria, promote on work effort and not one who's a buddy and plays the game.

I worked at Altria as an intern

    Pros

Good assigned living, pay, and coverage of expenses, up-front bonus, access to activities outside of the program, tries to make up for the industry, a family feeling between interns

    Cons

Still working with tobacco no matter the moral teachings, unequal access to important projects, a sense of smothering from certain supervisors, no choice in living location

    Advice to Management

Continue to provide employees with great benefits, continue to explore tobacco alternatives, be sure that all intern projects have the same level of importance to the company, train supervisors on how to work with interns as they may not always know how to maintain a positive work relationship with those beneath them

    Pros

Great company benefits. Flex fridays all year round, great health benefits. The company allows you a lot of work autonomy.

    Cons

It can be difficult to advance in the company due to geographic territories that can cause limitations. People who might have the skills might not have to opportunity to advance.

    Advice to Management

Be more transparent about what is going on at headquarters. Limit the amount of initiatives for each quarter.

I worked at Altria as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

It was a lot of fun, learned a lot and didn't work too many hours. It really depends on the TSM you work with.

    Cons

well they sell cigs and other tobacco products so that's not a great one to tell your girlfriend's parents about.

    Advice to Management

Management was really good, fluid, approachable and fun. At times the TSM can seem distant and you have too much responsibility without enough info on what to do.
