I worked at Altria full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedule, opportunity for advancement, vacation pay, profit sharing, company vehicle. It's a good start for an individual who does not want to work in an office.

    Cons

Not compensated for actually selling anything. Chrony culture. Most managers promoted too soon. "Corporate" culture with not many new ideas from leadership.

    Advice to Management

Sales programs need to be tailored geographically to meet the needs of the consumers and business partners.

I have been working at Altria as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Paid internship, great experience, opened my eyes to the "real" world of marketing, advertising, and strategy outside of a college classroom. Gain insight into a heavily regulated industry and learn how the system works from legal to creative.

    Cons

Very corporate feeling and bureaucratic. You need to be able to be passionate about tobacco-related products, which can be difficult since it is very controversial.

I worked at Altria as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Learning how to implement strategy helps a lot in an interview.

    Cons

You work for a cancer stick company. Intern's opinions are not valued highly

    Advice to Management

Have different internships for the same company (finance, investment, trading, etc.)

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits; they pay higher than the average employer.

    Cons

They decide half way through the year who they are going to promote.. absent any concrete variables. It is helter skelter. They put managers into roles that have no experience in that field/role but they have so much money they don't care how much money is wasted in corrections, redundancy, ill prepared workers, etc. It has gotten so everything is governed by audit and controls... if when audit has no knowledge of the business.

    Advice to Management

Get with the real world and hire from outside REAL talent.

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Altria seems committed to assisting transitioning veterans to find employment by offering a military skills translator that pairs your skills with the military schooling and certifications you have attained. They then take those skills and present you with open jobs that you seem to be qualified for. You then apply. It's very easy and veteran friendly.

    Cons

However, there is no place for a vet to post a DD214 to show veteran status or any indication in the application process that veterans will get preference under current law.

    Pros

Various opportunities to work with many people and achieve greater results.

A "clique" culture; you'd better hope you fit in!

    Be honest with your employees...always.

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Very challenging product to market requiring creative and critical thinking. The category continues to evolve with the entry of new alternatives to cigarettes and this company has excellent infrastructure in place to lead.

    Cons

Company needs to consider more diversity in their management ranks. There is little representation of women and people of color leading teams. The focus is on innovation rather than diversity which may lead to more innovation naturally.

    Advice to Management

Take full advantage of your diverse workforce. Be open to new ideas and business solutions.

I have been working at Altria full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The people there are great, the reward system is good (peer to peer rewards funded by the company), the starting salary and benefits are competitive, it is very flexible adn lots of opportunity for growth if you are a star performer

    Cons

Promotions have been shifted to focus on women lately (I am a woman, so this is not bias), it can get very gossipy which everyone loses productivity then.

    Advice to Management

Once a manager becomes disconnected with the field (DM and above) you can expect numbers to drop. No plan, no audits, no training...I've seen it in many markets.
