I have been working at Alvarez & Marsal full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Alvarez and Marsal had a wonderful, team-based culture that they prided themselves on. It was a great environment to work in, as an intern I was given many opportunities to work directly with executives and feel as if my work was contributing.

    Cons

Extremely referral-based company. Not much training for new staff.

I have been working at Alvarez & Marsal full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You meet wonderful people to work with. They offer a discretionary bonus. It is located in mid Manhattan near Central Park. Its a Global company and seems to be growing.

    Cons

There is no loyalty for the overly worked under paid staff. The work is to manual. System are slow and need better updates. The culture in the company has changed for the worst .There is a revolving door when it comes to Staff. There is no work to life balance. You do not get appreciated or valued. They offer high cost insurance. They give very minimum training. We are suppose to help other companies restructure themselves but we cant even help our own.

    Advice to Management

Learn to appreciate good staff. To many good , dedicated , loyal employee have left or have been asked to leave. Show value to those who deserve it.

I have been working at Alvarez & Marsal as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Included in projects immediately
Sitting in on meetings with MD's and clients
Shown a lot of respect and treated well

    Cons

Office is really empty if you work in a group that doesn't travel as much so it's hard to focus sometimes

I worked at Alvarez & Marsal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Generally free of bureaucracy, but mostly because there are no processes worth mentioning and the word "meritocracy" is unknown to upper management. If they like you then you can do what you want.

    Cons

This is a second rate organisation. The clients are generally middle-market and mid-tier. The leadership (outside of restructuring) are generally B players. The staff are a mix, with some A players (usually former MBB but some Big Four), a thick layer of B players, and a surprising number of Cs and Ds. There is limited accountability and sub-optimal cross-practice coordination. The variability between practices is high. Restructuring, Private Equity Performance Improvement, Tax, and Disputes and Investigations are first rate. Valuation is also very strong. Insurance has some strong personalities and generally is a good practice. Financial Services is a disaster. Poor leadership, exceptionally poor accountability, and poor decision making are rife. Avoid the cyber team there at all costs, the MD is incompetent (he even misspelled the company's own name on promotional material!). Corporate Performance Improvement needs someone who knows corporate performance improvement to improve their corporate performance, but has some good people. Back office functions are sloppy and weak. Basic capabilities such as time entry and travel booking are Stone Age.

    Advice to Management

Fire the dead weight. Institute real, rigorous management practices. Hire a consulting company that knows what it's doing to help you become a true consulting company.

    Pros

Good work culture, senior management tries hard to be inclusive. Great bonus, if you are highly utilized.

    Cons

Low base which leads to cut throat practices at times to boost utilization.

    Pros

Challenging work, focus on client service, experienced colleagues, minimal administrative overhead, pay commensurate with performance, clear incentive structure tied to collections and sales.

    Cons

Work life balance skews pretty severely toward work. Bottom line, this is a family business and at times the family's interests come first.

    I worked at Alvarez & Marsal full-time

    Pros

Very entrepreneurial. Directors and above basically run their own practices and are encouraged to seek out new business, develop and principal messages and new services.

    Cons

Very entrepreneurial. Directors and above each have to do all of product and business development, marketing, sales, engagement planning, staffing and fulfillment, client service, pricing and billing. Internal economics make many services less than profitable, regardless of demand or volume.

    Advice to Management

Reign in hip-shooters and service offerings to maintain work quality.
