I worked at Alvarez & Marsal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very open office, everyone was polite and got along well. A culture of flexibility and excellence. Yearly networking/training opportunity (AMU) is a unique and excellent opportunity for most A&M employees at Director level and below.

    Cons

The various groups did not communicate with each other well in various offices/cities regarding balancing workloads, sharing leads and there was very little cross promotion outside of specific practice groups.

I have been working at Alvarez & Marsal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Alvarez and Marsal is very different from other consulting firms in terms of the emphasis on hands on experience and exposure. The people here really 'think like owners' and are trying to drive results and not just make recommendations.
    - great team that genuinely wants to do the right thing for the client
    - if you work for the right MDs they will invest a lot of time in supporting and developing your career

    Cons

    - like many consulting firm it's a fiefdom. If you end up working for an MD that likes your work it can be tricky to have a different experience
    - it's consulting - so the hours and travel are tough (as they are in most firms)

I worked at Alvarez & Marsal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Generally free of bureaucracy, but mostly because there are no processes worth mentioning and the word "meritocracy" is unknown to upper management. If they like you then you can do what you want.

    Cons

This is a second rate organisation. The clients are generally middle-market and mid-tier. The leadership (outside of restructuring) are generally B players. The staff are a mix, with some A players (usually former MBB but some Big Four), a thick layer of B players, and a surprising number of Cs and Ds. There is limited accountability and sub-optimal cross-practice coordination. The variability between practices is high. Restructuring, Private Equity Performance Improvement, Tax, and Disputes and Investigations are first rate. Valuation is also very strong. Insurance has some strong personalities and generally is a good practice. Financial Services is a disaster. Poor leadership, exceptionally poor accountability, and poor decision making are rife. Avoid the cyber team there at all costs, the MD is incompetent (he even misspelled the company's own name on promotional material!). Corporate Performance Improvement needs someone who knows corporate performance improvement to improve their corporate performance, but has some good people. Back office functions are sloppy and weak. Basic capabilities such as time entry and travel booking are Stone Age.

    Advice to Management

Fire the dead weight. Institute real, rigorous management practices. Hire a consulting company that knows what it's doing to help you become a true consulting company.

    Pros

Good work culture, senior management tries hard to be inclusive. Great bonus, if you are highly utilized.

    Cons

Low base which leads to cut throat practices at times to boost utilization.

I have been working at Alvarez & Marsal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great place to work coming into the workforce
Great exposure to the firms executives and partners

    Cons

Don't always work on the exciting projects they tell you you're going to work on
Seems like Partners compete with each other rather than work as a team
It's all about utilization and if the partners aren't selling you won't get a bonus
Used to have a stronger culture but changing and not for the better

    Advice to Management

Change the way you go to market and include the mid-level staff in planning
