I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Best place I've ever worked, brilliant engineers, really interesting projects and focus is on delivering rather than internal politics. The quality of engineering is excellent and people care about operational excellence. The big decisions are typically date driven rather than opinion based which is refreshing.

    Cons

It is challenging, you get stretched and expectations are high. You need to be able to prioritize and manage your time effectively otherwise you end up with a poor work life balance. Nobody is going to do this for you so you need to either have or develop this ability.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the culture of engineering and operational excellence.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Amazon is definitely not the company where you sit, relaxed, and slowly work through your tasks for the month; it's *actually* what they called a "fast paced" environment: a new adventure every day, a new challenge every project. You definitely don't get bored here! Of course this means you have the opportunity to make a huge difference everyday, along with some of the bests in the Industry.

    Cons

The company is growing mindbogglingly fast these years, and this is bringing prioritization challenges, sometimes ripping apart entire organizations. The Leadership and management are nevertheless up for the challenge and everybody recognizes that only working together we will manage the upcoming challenges.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working in IT/AWS. Everything revolving around operations and being technical, creating automation, tools, and tools for tools, and yet more scripts and tools, even for very simple tasks. Also you're told you can do anything you want, but if you don't do well enough with tickets and on-call, your employment may be in danger.

    Cons

Often people try to solve non-technical problems by engineering themselves out of them (not an exact situation, but similar to: let's create a tool so we don't have to talk to each other too much). Don't see people smiling in the office very often. Culture a bit dull and disappointing, emphasis on working hard. People get promoted for working hard and peer feedback instead of competencies, which leads to frustration of those competent. Not much teamwork, great focus on individual contributions, which leads to unhealthy competition. If someone is frustrating others but delivers results, management usually won't help the situation with others.

    Advice to Management

No generic advice, there are thousands of teams, each with their own culture. For the ones I know I would advise to micromanage less and make conscious effort of making good use of people's capabilities, not trying to forcefully fit them to any static role if they can perform better in another.

I worked at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1) You have a great exposure to technologies
    2) There are awesome colleagues that you can learn from
    3) The customer obsession is a good principle to work better

    Cons

    1) oncall shifts are intense and stressful
    2) You are only a wheel in a big machine
    3) The evaluation criteria are not very clear

    Advice to Management

There should be better communication between what happens below and above levels. There should be better and fairer evaluation steps.
