I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Jeff Bezos and his "S-Team" are brilliant and continue to make great decisions for long-term growth.

You work with smart people, you work on exciting projects, you are pushed to your limits...which can be rewarding when you accomplish great things. The diversity of the potential work and innovation can be very alluring. I've often called Amazon my "Sexy Mistress...she's emotionally abusive, but she's so sexy that I go back for more punishment."

    Cons

The management process is abusive, and I'm currently a manager. I've seen too much "behind the wall" and hate how our individual performers can be treated. You are forced to ride people and stack rank employees...I've been forced to give good employees bad overall ratings because of politics and stack ranking.

    Advice to Management

Don't pretend that the recent NY Times article was all about "isolated incidents". The culture IS abusive and it WILL backfire once stock value starts to drop. I'm an 8 year veteran and I no longer recommend former peers to interview with Amazon.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The workplace is open and genuine.

Everyone's voice is heard in technical discussions and team meetings.

The technical challenges are very real and usually interesting.

The development and operations tools provided are powerful and easily available.

Talented colleagues that embody the Amazon leadership principles.

    Cons

SDE on-call can be painful, but it's a great learning opportunity and motivator. Something to be aware of.

Systems and their interactions are very complex. There won't always be a happy path to find the answers needed to do your job. Expect to spend significant time diving into code and asking questions to learn about how things work. Also a good opportunity to learn and grow.

You will work with legacy technology. Amazon systems are powerful but they are not gold plated.

Work with other teams can be bureaucratic, slow, painful.

My current office building is old, awkward, and not the most comfortable working space. This is especially true when comparing to other Amazon office buildings.

    Advice to Management

Continue to treat your people with respect, thanks!

Let's work on having an Amazon-worthy physical workspace.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Everyone here owns what they do and if something goes wrong the team works WITH other teams to deliver a product to the customer regardless of where the issue is.

    Cons

None that I can think of from working in Amazon Web Services.

    Advice to Management

Stick to the LPs and remain self aware.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I've been working for Amazon Web Services for over five years now and I have enjoyed the experience. I appreciate excellent work-life balance. It's extremely rare to work more than 40 hours/week or to work in the evening/weekend. I have lots of vacation and virtually no restriction when I can take it. On-call is unfortunately a thing but it's just one week every 2-3 months. Sometimes I won't get paged at all, sometimes a get woken up one or twice but again that's very rare and we definitely consider instances where people got paged to be Bad Things and try to remedy them. Comp seems solid but I have admittedly not done a whole lot of shopping around lately.

    Cons

Open space offices. I hate open space office and strongly believe it detracts from effective collaboration and productivity. But this is not unique to Amazon, you'll get this at most tech companies.
