I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Work in Softlines Tech after positions at AT&T, Zynga, and a tech startup and the main pain points I had in previous positions are resolved here:

    - Overall good morale and positive internal view of leadership due to the company's rapid growth and amazing new areas/products
    - No bureaucracy (free to spin up the AWS hardware and services needed to do my job)
    - Best management I've worked for (3 levels up are all former engineers themselves who respect engineers and trust us to do our job without micromanaging)
    - High hiring bar = great teammates
    - The most clear and objective method for promotion of any company I've been in
    - As a new dad, work/life balance is incredibly good working regular 9-5 hours, work from home Wednesdays, and management being super flexible about random family needs that come up.

    Cons

    - Not as many perks as Facebook or Google but seriously, after having worked at Zynga where we had as many perks as you could want, it really isn't as important as the pros I mentioned above and seriously heard more complaints from coworkers at Zynga about the perks than appreciation.

    Advice to Management

As often as possible, keep hiring managers who have done the work of those they are managing. The respect and understanding they have for those they manage as a result is hugely important.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible Schedule, Family Oriented, Comprehensive Training, Good Benefits, Opportunity for Upward Mobility, Good Work/Life Balance Is Expected And Encouraged

    Cons

    Peak Mandatory Overtime, Holiday Blackouts

    Advice to Management

Base pay should be increased to $16/hr. That would improve the caliber of candidates we receive and retain.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Smart people, beuracracy levels are impressively low for such a large organization, many training and coaching resources, everyone wants to be helpful, practically everyone is energized and owns their work.

    Cons

Takes time to learn to navigate such a huge corporation. Two or three systems exist for some things and not always clear what system should be used. Too many meetings, especially for managers.

    Advice to Management

Reduce the number of meetings and try to follow your own day 1 mentality that you are trying to instill into your workforce.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Constantly evolving! It is a company that is not afraid of change and trying new things. The position itself is fast paced, a lot of face time with associates, and never dull. Advancement is there for those who want it. You can relocate anywhere you want, Amazon is everywhere.

    Cons

You need to have a strong work ethic, if you do not have one, don't apply. You will be working in a world of ambiguity, if you can't handle that and are not the type of person that can come up with solutions without much direction, this isn't the place for you. If you have thin skin and can't take constructive feedback, this isn't the place for you. Amazon is the kind of place where you are surrounded by all "A team" players. There is a saying, Amazon is where overachievers go to work to feel mediocre. It is hard work.

    Advice to Management

Be able to work hard. Be able to work long hours. It will pay off in the end.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Amazon in general is an innovative company and the opportunities for professional growth are unlimited - both within and beyond your current role. My current team members are supportive, intelligent, and motivated. The work-life balance is also outstanding.

    Cons

You need to be a self-starter here and an independent learner to succeed. Also, if you're on a new team, the expectations might not be clearly defined yet, so you will need to be comfortable working in a start-up mode. This is not a con for me at all and I actually prefer this type of work environment, but I know that it's not for everyone.

    Pros

    Challenging work, Meritocracy, Recognition, Flexibility

    Cons

    The work is hard
    somewhat bureaucratic

    Advice to Management

Continue seeking out feedback from mid-level employees. Often we really see what works, what doesn't and what is hindering productivity.

Also, some of the greatest ideas can come from people who are passionate about what Amazon does. Continue to encourage employees to put forth ideas and empower them to help develop the vision for a great new product.
