I worked at Amazon as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Couldn't ask for a better mentor, manager or teammates. They gave me a perfect intern project--very enjoyable to work on, raising many interesting algorithmic questions, and very relevant, but mostly to what the team would be doing in the next year, so there wasn't too much pressure--and they were consistently supportive and encouraging no matter how often I pestered them with questions about how exactly my project would be used and feedback on API decisions. They were extremely generous with their time and never made me feel like I was taking too much of it.

Work/life balance was quite reasonable for the people on my team. You'd have to work much longer hours in places like AWS, but people generally know what they're getting into and it's nothing like the NYTimes "expose" in 2015 would suggest.

    Cons

Introverts may find it difficult to meet other interns (as I did) at the very large events designed for this purpose, where it is easy to feel lost.

    Advice to Management

My one con seems inevitable given the huge intern body, but it's possible they could have more structured events for meeting other interns.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Amazon is a great place to learn new technologies, to get hands on experience in design, development, support. It is also great place where everyone is owner and contribute towards companies vision.

    Cons

Amazon is too much frugal in all its aspects. They tripled transportation cost to employees but never increased employee health, internet benefits. But most of the employees employees really don't care about it much.

    Advice to Management

Keep raising the bar, it's still day one.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Hard problems, lots of smart people. Good support from managers, and fun projects.

    Cons

The company is so big it takes a little while to learn to navigate internal sites to find other teams that are doing similar things in order to collaborate.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up, you already listen to us by taking actions on surveys.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Build systems that impact a lot of people and do huge things. If your team isn't making millions of dollars a year, you'll be on a new team soon.

Coworkers who range from competent to excellent.

    Decent pay for the area.

    Cons

If you're on a team with bad managers you will hate life. At least there is a new policy allowing you to transfer ASAP, which you should do. (- culture/values)

Things are a bit too team dependent. I'm on a team I like. There are other teams that cannot retain people at all because their managers straight up suck at their jobs. (- senior management)(- culture/values)

Comp is decent but not competitive with google/facebook/uber. (- comp rating)

Crunch time is a management failure so you can expect to see it a few times a year. (- work/life)

    Advice to Management

Hold management accountable for being terrible. If all of your devs quit multiple times, that manager needs to be fired. (- senior management)

    "Fascinating projects, poor work-life balance"

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

    - Work with top talent.
    - Work on high-scale, fascinating work.
    - Good company mobility. Changing teams every year or two is encouraged, giving the opportunity for a lot of diversity of experience if desired.

    Cons

Depending on your team and your project, the work-life balance for software developers and software development managers can be very poor (frequent on-call rotations, 50+ hours per week norm, unreasonably demanding management). This varies greatly from team to team. Some teams are excellent at providing a good balance, and others are meat-grinders. It depends so much on your management chain. Can your manager negotiate appropriate boundaries such that other teams do not take advantage of you? Is your manager obsessed with arbitrary delivery dates, and will he or she pressure the team at all costs to meat them? Does your manager know how to put together detailed multi-quarter delivery plans? If the answers are "yes", "no", and "yes", then you should be alright.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You work together with some very smart people and have the ownership and freedom to drive your project. Tasks are fun because of the sheer scale that comes with every challenge. There is still a startup mentality embodied deeply into the company.

    Cons

Frugality is core to the company. This means less free stuff like softdrinks, gym memberships etc. It also means you have to justify time spend (for example on an idea). But if you can, you get all the support you need.

    Advice to Management

Consider increasing benefits to compete with other tech companies.

    Pros

Huge company that is doing a little bit of everything. Your contributions do have an impact of the direction of your group.

    Cons

Problems get approached with a one-size-fits-all approach quite often. In embedded engineering that usually doesn't work. Tooling, environments and methodologies for embedded don't match up with web services.

I have been working at Amazon full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Ownership based, pro development culture.
    - Scale at which Amazon operates (there is hardly any company in the world that operates at this scale).
    - Innovation, Think Big and Deliver Results are contagious. Once you get in touch great people, you can't avoid getting influenced. You get an opportunity to work with some of the world's brightest minds, and over the period of time you start thinking and acting like the one.
    - You develop habit of deep thinking, data driven decision making.

    Cons

    - Non tech functions, at times are process heavy, which btw is changing rapidly. Amazon has significantly simplified the annual reviews process. The new process is not only simple but focuses more on strengths than areas of development, which is real morale booster.

    Advice to Management

    - Keep up the focus on innovation, customer obsession.
    - The rigor that company shows in everything it does, is important both for the success of the company and development of employees. Anyone who works at Amazon for couple of years generally is a completely transformed person.
